What Are The Benefits Of Fusion Energy?

Post by Doka » 11-11-2022 08:54 PM

This always been a pet pick of mine, even before the got it in a can. Fun to watch and see what happens. One thing for sure it will be a huge ,positve step for Mankind! Idiots will no longer feel the need to "glue" them selves to price less art and etc.

As the world moves towards net-zero emissions, sustainable and affordable power sources are urgently needed by humanity.

As Visual Capitalist's Bruno Venditti details below, one of the most promising technologies, fusion, has attracted the attention of governments and private companies like Chevron and Google. In fact, Bloomberg Intelligence has estimated that the fusion market may eventually be valued at $40 trillion.

In this infographic sponsored by General Fusion, we discuss the benefits of fusion as a clean energy source.

The Ultimate Source of Energy

Fusion powers the sun and the stars, where the immense force of gravity compresses and heats hydrogen plasma, fusing it into helium and releasing enormous amounts of energy. Here on Earth, scientists use isotopes of hydrogen—deuterium and tritium—to power fusion plants.

Fusion energy offers a wide range of benefits, such as:

1. Ample resources:

Both atoms necessary for nuclear fusion are abundant on Earth: deuterium is found in seawater, while tritium can be produced from lithium.

2. Sustainable

Energy-dense generation like fusion minimizes land use needs and can replace aging infrastructure like old power plants.

3. Clean

There are no CO₂ or other harmful atmospheric emissions from the fusion process.

4. Scalable

With limited expected regulatory burden or export controls, fusion scales effectively with a small land footprint that can be located close to cities.

5. Safety advantage

Unlike atomic fission, fusion does not create any long-lived radioactive nuclear waste. Its radiation profile is similar to widely used medical and industrial applications like cyclotrons for cancer treatment.

6. Reliable

Fusion energy is on-demand and independent from the weather, making it an excellent option in a dependable portfolio for power generation.
Commercializing Fusion Energy

More than 130 countries have now set or are considering a target of reducing emissions to net-zero by 2050. Meanwhile, global energy demand is expected to increase by 47% in the next 30 years.

While renewables like wind and solar are intermittent and need a baseload source of clean energy to supplement them, fusion, when commercially implemented, could deliver clean, abundant, reliable, and cost-competitive energy.

You don't have to sell me on fusion energy. I'm pre-sold. But then again, I'm not a radical Woke eco-extremist wind & solar worshiper.

My personal thought is that "Energy" is ready to go. BUT! Who is going to allow it when Thousands of idiots have invested Trillions of dollars in windmills and solar? These people who are just as delusional as our friend Don Quixote! In fact the world is currently full of Don Quixote's, but, certainly NOT as loveable!

California scientists make history using world's biggest laser to replicate reaction that powers sun

•US government scientists lab have reportedly made a breakthrough in harnessing the much sought-after fusion energy power source
•Using the world's largest laser researchers coaxed fusion fuel for the first time to heat itself beyond the heat energy that was zapped into it
•Fusion energy could provide a limitless and cleaner alternative to fossil fuels
It offers the prospect of abundant energy without pollution or greenhouse gases

Arizona scientists may have discovered a source of unlimited clean energy by recreating the process of nuclear fusion which powers the sun.

Researchers at the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab in California were able to spark a fusion reaction that briefly sustained itself - a major feat because fusion requires such high temperatures and pressures that it easily fizzles out.

The experiment was performed in August, but reported for the first time earlier this month. Similar tests have been performed before, but this was the first one that generated more energy than was used to create the experiment - meaning scientists could now harness nuclear fusion as an energy source.

The August test actually generated more energy than scientists predicted, and damaged some equipment.

But it could now represent a groundbreaking moment in humankind's move away from fossil fuels like oil and coal to completely clean energy sources that do not pollute the air, or scar landscapes with mining or pipelines.

The ultimate goal, still years away, is to generate power the way the sun generates heat, by pushing hydrogen atoms so close to each other that they combine into helium, which releases torrents of energy.

A single cupful of that substance could power an average-sized house for hundreds of years, with no carbon emissions.

Using the world's largest laser, consisting of 192 beams and temperatures more than three times hotter than the center of the sun, the researchers coaxed fusion fuel for the first time to heat itself beyond the heat they zapped into it - achieving a net energy gain.

Fusion Energy Breakthrough?

Post by Riddick » 12-12-2022 03:44 PM

The big buzz in energy today is the report that the Lawrence Livermore Lab has made a potential breakthrough in fusion energy, for the first time getting more energy out of a fusion reaction than was put in to ignite the fusion process. A formal announcement is expected tomorrow.

While encouraging, a few notes of realism need to be kept in mind. First, as the cliche goes, fusion energy has been ten years away for the last 50 years. I recall hearing Lawrence Livermore Lab people saying ten years ago that they were “very close” to the necessary breakthrough. Perhaps this is it at last, but there are immense engineering challenges to making fusion commercially scalable and affordable.

Ask yourself two more questions: how fast will environmentalists move to oppose fusion energy, even though it has none of the hazards of nuclear power? Keep in mind that Paul Ehrlich once said that a cheap and inexhaustible supply of energy—which fusion in theory promises to be—would be a disaster for humanity (“Would be like giving an idiot child a machine gun” was his exact phrase), because reasons. My guess is we’ll hear environmentalist opposition to fusion energy expressed after tomorrow’s announcement.

Next, ask yourself how the rent-seekers currently pocketing billions of dollars of subsidies for wind and solar power are going to react to the prospect of (eventually) cheap fusion power? “Not well” would be an understatement. Look for the planet-saving rent-seekers to hobble the development of fusion energy with regulatory and funding constraints with the same playbook used to hobble nuclear power 50 years ago.

Look's time will given to investors to move some money around. With any luck it will bankrupt the wind /solar industry. SORRY, for that , except.......You must remember , the Biden Regime only backs Losers! This is NOT going to make the "Evil Ones" happy.

Fusion industry suddenly white-hot after US lab breakthrough

Michl Binderbauer is chief executive of a southern California firm that aims to create almost limitless energy through nuclear fusion, a starry goal that at times struck some prospective investors as futuristic.

That all changed this week.

"We call somebody and we get a meeting immediately. Before some would say this is crazy stuff, no, it’s not for me," said Mr. Binderbauer, chief executive of fusion firm TAE Technologies. The company has raised around $1.2 billion in previous years, and he said it received a flurry of new investor inquiries this week.

The game-changing event for Mr. Binderbauer’s company, and the rest of the fusion industry, was a long-awaited physics breakthrough announced this week by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

US SCIENTISTS MAKE MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH IN ‘LIMITLESS, ZERO-CARBON’ FUSION ENERGY: REPORT

Through a controlled-fusion reaction, the lab for the first time on Dec. 5 achieved net gain, which means it produced more energy than was put in, the Energy Department said Tuesday. Researchers at the lab’s multibillion-dollar National Ignition Facility have been studying nuclear fusion for more than a decade, using lasers to create conditions that cause hydrogen atoms to fuse and release vast amounts of carbon-free energy.

"It feels like a new era has started, the Wright Brothers-moment of fusion," said Heike Freund, chief operating officer for Marvel Fusion, a startup based in Munich that hopes to develop commercially viable fusion power generation. Like the NIF project, Marvel is using lasers to generate enough heat to create fusion.

Before this month’s breakthrough, the energy industry had been riding a wave of clean-tech and climate-focused investing, and fusion-based companies now stand to compete for a bigger slice of that funding. The Fusion Industry Association, an industry group based in Washington, D.C., said fusion-energy companies have raised more than $5 billion in private funding, roughly doubling the amount from a year ago.

The excitement around the discovery is tempered by the reality that commercialization of the process is years if not decades away. Scientists would have to master and refine complex processes and systems before they could move to building a power-generating reactor.

"It’s going to take a while before we see this commercialized," Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said during a press conference Tuesday from Energy Department headquarters in Washington, D.C.
