NPR Trashes Free Speech

Post by Riddick » 09-01-2021 12:32 PM

Edited & excepted from Matt Taibbi @ Substack:

In an irony only public radio could miss, "On the Media" hosted an hour on the perils of "free speech absolutism" without interviewing a defender of free speech. That's about right for NPR, as for years now, it has regularly congratulated itself for being a beacon of diversity while expunging every conceivable alternative POV.

Guests for the episode about the dangers of free speech included Andrew Marantz, author of “Free Speech is Killing Us”; P.E. Moskowitz, author of “The Case Against Free Speech”; Susan Benesch, director of the “Dangerous Speech Project”; and Berkeley professor John Powell, whose contribution was to rip John Stuart Mill’s defense of free speech in On Liberty as “wrong.”

The show was a compendium of every neo-authoritarian argument for speech control, and shockingly dishonest. The essence of the guests' case is the modern formulation of speech rights is based on Mill’s outdated notion of harm, which they summarized as, “My freedom to swing my fist ends at the tip of your nose.”

Because, they say, we now know people can be harmed by something other than physical violence, Mill (whose thoughts NPR overlaid with harpsichord music, so we could be reminded how antiquated they are) was wrong, and we have to recalibrate our take on speech rights and change legal standards accordingly.

In cheerful agreement they’d demolished any case against "getting away from individual rights and the John Stuart Mill stuff," Marantz and Gladstone felt it more appropriate to embrace both the notion of preventing "psychological harm," and modern philosopher Richard Rorty's idea of "replacing the whole framework" of society, which includes "not doing the individual rights thing anymore."

It was all a near-perfect distillation of the pretensions of NPR’s current target audience, which clearly feels we’ve reached the blue-state version of the End Of History, where all important truths are agreed upon, and there’s no longer need to indulge empty gestures to pluralism like the "marketplace of ideas."

Mill ironically pointed out "princes, or others who are accustomed to unlimited deference, usually feel this complete confidence in their own opinions on nearly all subjects." Sound familiar? To speech advocates the most important regulation issue has always been the identity of the people setting the rules.

If there are to be limits on speech, someone has to set them, which means some group is inherently going to wield extraordinary power over another. Speech rights are a bulwark against such imbalances, not only defending the minority against government repression but what Mill called "the tyranny of prevailing opinion."

Yes, speech can be harmful, which is why principled journalists accept libel and incitement laws and myriad other restrictions, and why new rules will probably have to be concocted for some of the unique problems of the Internet age.

But the most dangerous creatures in the speech landscape are always know-it-all aristocrats who can’t wait to start cutting out sections of the Bill of Rights. It’d be nice if public radio could find space for at least one voice willing to point that out.

They've got guts in that their bellies are full of guile & bile, & they use the media to spew their vile vomit and castigate anyone & everyone with notions contrary to theirs - But that doesn't mean they're not compassionate! Wolk folk would love the rest of us IF ONLY we'd stop being so GD stubborn & STFU & just drink the FN Kool-aid already -

You see it's THEY who care about people! You know the old saying, there's a fine line between love & hate? Just tow the Woke line, and everything'll be fine, just fine... Yeah right! They keep moving the line so nothing will ever be fine, & they'll never not hate, 'cuz hating's what they do. Is it any wonder everything Woke turns to sh!t??

At NPR, Republicans Are All ‘Hard’ or ‘Far’ Right

Post by Riddick » 01-26-2023 10:39 AM

But no Democrats are “hard” or “far” left

To me this article comes as no surprise. If they're not trashing free speech, they're trashing conservatives. Diversity & inclusion in action! Isn't it wonderful?

They have a lot of that "Chinese Money. Yet they continue to "Bilk" the American Public, who just want to watch "All Creatures Great and Small", and pay dearly for it.

Republicans, Here's Your Chance To Dump NPR

Post by Riddick » 04-18-2023 11:21 PM

Elon Musk has reclassified National Public Radio as "state-affiliated media" – which is 100% accurate. This is a golden opportunity for Republicans to add NPR to the long list of unnecessary things in our federal budget. Once again, Musk has done something bold, highlighting something taxpayers don't need or want. FULL STORY
