Dedicated to Gil Hodges - My baseball play not written in our papers sports section?

Post by Malaria_Kidd II » 01-03-2016 02:01 AM

Credited from Twitter's New York Mets' Gil Hodges brief bio

https://twitter.com/Mets/status/1467969 ... 30912?s=19

Dedicated to Indiana's Gibson & Pike County Baseball Icon Gil Hodges

Gilbert Ray Hodges was born on April 4, 1924 in Princeton, Indiana and raised in Petersburg. He was a US Marine in WW II during April 1945 on Okinawa and was awarded the Bronze Star. He coached the New York "Miracle" Mets to World Series victory in 1969, an 8 time All Star and the Brooklyn Dodgers 3 time Golden Glove Champion First Baseman!

Strange but true!๐Ÿ˜ This play of mine is not one you will ever see if you watch or play baseball. The game was first played in England in the late 1700's! :)

Where - United States, Indiana - Owensville High School's baseball diamond in Gibson County

When - late July in 1965

What - once again the paranormal changed the normal in sports! This true sports report was an impossible to stop Louisville Slugger's low line drive and potential tying run quickly nullified by a first baseman from mid Right Field! I was that First Baseman!

This went out the back door on http://www.snopes.com . My long archived entry was 'Off-The-Wall Sports Plays Seen or Done'. I put it in Sports, but the manager moved it to Amusement Bark.

Since it was moved I thought it was deleted. More than a month later I found it. It was fairly well accepted and had several interesting posts. I quickly said sorry for being late, and thanked the folks replying. They had entered some wild ones and a few posted links to major league sports plays!

I was upfront with all who had replied nicely and I wrote this is my reason for starting that thread; My baseball play off-the-wall at age 16. For months my last post was never replied to and it went fast into the "Dark Pages"! :? Members there got bent out of shape if you renewed your old posts. That is common in active forums. :P

Picture this; A night time Colt League game behind the old school* with about 100 folks watching. See if you can guess the paranormal part of this true story. All answers will get my fast reply!

 We had never beat Vendall the "best" Fort Branch, Indiana team being played. We always won the games with EMGE the other team from the same neighboring town. It was the 6th inning and we led 7 to 6 with two outs. The tying run was their big second baseman on 2nd base. I had played first base many past years and I moved to the left a few feet to defend against a left handed batter, their first baseman at bat.

The first pitch by my cousin Jack was low and he slammed an in bound low liner parallel to the foul line. I moved left to try a catch with my big red Taiwan made first baseman's glove. I missed by a foot!

And now my off-the-wall baseball play begins....

 The word "error" was inside my head. So I turned left over the foul line! I threw down my glove! I pulled out my floppy billfold from my rear hip pocket! I threw off my cap! I headed into Right Field as fast as I could run! I yelled at the fully capable right fielder, "Danny! I've got it!" Danny was charging the ball and stopped well short in amazement. He stayed put allowing me the still rolling ball which I grabbed with my right hand!

Time out for this note; Our school's custodian mowed the grass all cut around 4-5" with his International Cub tractor. This friction on the ball gave me a chance to catch up to it. But I did not think about that factor. I was mad at myself for missing the ball!

I turned around and yelled loudly, "Jerry!" Our catcher already knew the baseball was coming his way. My eyes were blurry with wind tears from my adrenalin enhanced run. I reared back and threw to home plate around 140+ feet away in a try to nullify the tying run!

The ball was not cut off to be relayed to home plate by Darrell our smart second baseman. It flew shoulder high all the way dead centered into Jerry's unmoving glove placed chest high. He turned to meet the runner. The runner didn't slide hoping a collision would dislodge the ball. A huge dust cloud arose as I watched with clearing eyes. Jerry jumped up holding the ball up high. Floyd our umpire yelled, "You're out!", also with a high swing of his arm.

As I returned to pick up all of my many dis-guarded items our second baseman Darrell said, " That's three away! Let's go in!" Car horns were honking and there were a lot of smiles in the dugout! Our assistant coach said nothing but his big smile was enough for me! :D

Over time figuring this out I came up with this reason for my anomaly or off-the-wall stunt. I wanted my "error" rectified on a PDQ impulse AND the missed ball chase was sparked by being scorned and spiked by their first baseman. Before the many games we played I would speak to him. He would never return the gesture. He got on base a lot, and I really noticed his habit of spiking my ankle with steel spikes. That was a cut injury that you'll notice the hit, but the pain is not so instant, but later on, wow! Other players seldom hit my ankle.

I never will forget the look on his face as he walked in from second base. He threw his batting helmet at the dugout fence. We won the game 9 to 6 after Gary's two run homer with me on base. I hope he remembers that anomaly of revenge to this day. I don't remember his name, but I sure remember that play! 8)

A few days later Jerry opened the palm of his left hand to show me the red spot from my very hot baseball! I don't have to close my eyes to remember that game. I relive my play in colour for a moment during every day! And I think you would too!

But if you've seen this exact play on a loose infield baseball just let me know about it here.

MK II

P.S.
As a Little League player I used to stand in right field day dreaming of some play executed by me saving a game and that play fit perfectly! :D

In these once very active forums, now-a-days it's mainly the view count that matters the most!

REF 51 years ago this coming July and it's still one of my clearest memories.

Post a note if you are familiar with baseball and maybe played that sport a lot. Once again what was the paranormal part of my off-the-wall play that lowered that high and mighty team's sails? :coolhat:

 I've always got a question that lingers on into the "dark pages".

First off I'm very happy with the view count*. :o :D

Next? If my survivors order a decent sized tombstone for me there are two subjects I would like to have pre planned to be "laser engraved" on the front or the back side or both sides!

# 1 would be a "Memphis, TN westbound" Greyhound bus :!:

http://fantasticforum.com/1res/viewtopi ... 34&t=49632

# 2 would be a baseball with our catcher's name on it! Just like this "JERRY :!: "

Folks walking by would not have a clue as to the reasons for those two subjects being on my stone, but the persevering & very dedicated Fantastic Forum Members and frequent Visitors here would know. 8)

View Count*

If you've been contributing to these sites as for as long as I have you'd realize this fact. If one writes a book and then get's it published you know the eventual number of sales. What you would never know is how many times the book is read in one family then maybe it's passed onto a friend; or how many times it's read "checked out" of a public library!

In these dust stirred up places you have a pretty good idea how many people have bothered to open your book's pages for an individual read. For a story you initially hoped would inspire a visitor or member to view it. It's worked well here it seems! 8)

 I am green faced that my impulse triggered Colt League baseball antics has garnered so much interest to date :!:

Long ago I sent this play of mine to Ripley's Believe It or Not after a Ripley's rep was on Coast to Coast AM with host George Noory. He'd hinted of wanting sports BION stories for consideration. I received a quick reply saying, "I need witnesses to prove it was true." My message back said I could find many witnesses. Then nothing else was returned. :?

The Louisville Slugger Museum in Louisville, Kentucky now has a Ripley's display on "Bizarre Baseball" that will last until sometime in 2017. I sent my off-the-wall infielder's play to that museum tonight via Twitter. I doubt I'll get a Tweet back on that but you never know.

:D Many thanks to the well over 1,000 viewers who've been here :!:

I'd never given this idea a previous thought. It could be a fact the long dedicated and steadfast few FF members, still contributing daily, have never played baseball.

"Rest in peace" to our 1965 Colt League team's greatest catcher, Jerry Keith Thompson 68. :(

On March 31st he was returned home for a celebration of life in the new church East of town.

โšพ Jerry was the key player in my off-the-wall surprisingly successful play that still amazes me to the sad day of February 12, 2018 for myself, his local relatives and his McKinney, Texas family. Jerry's biggest sports supporter, his dad Bernard, passed away just two months ago. :(

I'd lost track of the high view count from Dark Page #5. Of that huge number surely most have played the game of baseball or wished they had. But that statement hopefully will not remain a secret here too much longer. :fortune:

"Jerry!", just like that will be centered across an official sized โšพ baseball โšพ laser cut onto my tombstone facing West! And likely only you few would know why that was etched in polished granite, for eternity.

Play ball! My baseball play not written up in our papers sports section?

Post by Malaria_Kidd II » 09-19-2019 03:18 AM

Supernaturalearth's exact sports report in the UK held an entry I had not placed here. It's from a former co-worker and a fan of major league baseball. You guessed it! I told him this one for sure as well as many other friends I knew right after they chatted up a recent game of any fav pro baseball team.

Hey Now MK II, thanks for the timely topic bump - As it is MLB's in the home stretch to the post season, and the Brewers are still in the running for a playoff berth despite a shattered kneecap taking last year's NL MVP Christian Yelich out last week.

As much I can't think of anything majorly paranormal that's in a league with your supernatural sports story, as it happens your play DOES remind me of this classic baseball gem that's 100% pure comedy magic and certainly "off the wall" baffling! -

Well Riddick, thanks for your interest and unique comment that I believe is a "one of" in the games history from any infield position! My snap judgement play running from the 1st base infield foul line out into center right field is now in great company! I like it and "Who's on first?" from Hollywood's most off-the-wall comedy duo, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, is tough to keep up with their super back and forth banter!๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜…

I was happy my extremely accurate 100 mph? throw was not an instant peanut gallery comedy!๐Ÿ˜…๐ŸƒIt would be hard to live that down, as they say, about any sports play gone wrong!๐Ÿšง๐Ÿšง๐Ÿšง ๐Ÿšฝ ๐ŸŽฑ โšพ

These ballpark's short grass or Astro Turf would have made my impulse activated ball run down impossible.

Hmm! Twitter has made some changes. Let's see what happens.๐Ÿ˜Ž Cool deal, the link picked up the OT!

My favourite baseball player, locally born and raised, Gil Hodges FINALLY achieved a 75% 12-16 vote approving his nomination for a July 2022 induction into The Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this month! The Hall's negative, lurking, committee members over those long years should all be ashamed!

Well! By golly! Why would a Yelp moderator allow it to stay visible?

Someone, finally at Yelp, must have found the Fantastic Forum was waaay too much alt news than "they" wanted to read that day. This copied single line cut away my note under Petersburg, Indiana's fabulous mural picturing fresh this week of Gilbert Ray Hodges induction into Baseball's Hall of Fame!
ยฟ โฌ… It fits but where did that come from?

The 2 reviews above rated this huge painting just 4 stars๐Ÿ˜ฃ. I had clicked 5 stars and gave good reasons why for this huge mural tribute to Gil by artist Randy Heddon.

See this bull tihs line in the Yelp link below and my brief review is in there too! It's oddly still there once you click this same line!

For the longest time it was readable but wokeness finally won out taking away my 5 stars for Gil and Randy's superb mural.

https://www.yelp.com/biz/gil-hodges-mural-petersburg

Pitts off!๐Ÿ˜†

"1 other review that is not currently recommended"

My old "fake" baseball "infielder's choice" "one of play" led to our win, not local sports news and my mural tribute notations to the Mets Miracle Worker Gil must rank with the best sports related lies "Yelp" has ever read.๐Ÿ˜‚ Not!

"Let's go Yelp!" If you get my drift. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here it is....

My โญโญโญโญโญ's were deleted from bringing up the average that lasted 2 years being 4.5!โšก๐ŸŒช

My review of this 5 star + rating is because the two depictions of Gil on each side look just like him!

I passed by this "picture perfect mural" safely hauling coal hundreds of times feeling great appreciation for artist Randy Heddon.

Correction: Gil was born in Princeton and raised in Petersburg. Living in Gibson County he was my major league baseball hero. My Mother made sure I knew all about him long before I played the game. He was a decorated U.S. Marine hero on Okinawa in 1945. Like Gil, I played First Base too. Here is my "one of it's kind infielders play" I now dedicate to Pike and Gibson Countys own, Gil Hodges.
