Brokeback Mountain lives! Despite all of the tragedy associated with the people who worked on that film, it lives, more than ever! And the shadow that it casts gets longer with every passing year! As the current polls indicate, abundantly...

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN AUTHOR SAYS FANS PESTER HER
THE THINGS THEY SAY 9683

The writer of Brokeback Mountain, about the precarious love affair between two gay cowboys, says that since the movie was released in 2005 she has constantly been pestered by fans who have sent her "pornish" scripts that alter her story. "There are countless people out there who think the story is open range to explore their fantasies and to correct what they see as an unbearably disappointing story," Annie Proulx told the Wall Street Journal. "They constantly send ghastly manuscripts and pornish rewrites of the story to me, expecting me to reply with praise and applause for 'fixing' the story. They certainly don't get the message that if you can't fix it, you've got to stand it." She added that while the film has not affected her career as a writer, it "is the source of constant irritation in my private life."

Screen Actors Guild gong lifts hopes of Oscar for Heath Ledger
Los Angeles January 27, 2009

THE posthumous coronation of Heath Ledger continued yesterday when he was feted as the year's best supporting actor at the Screen Actors Guild awards.

Coupled with his earlier triumph at the Golden Globes, yesterday's acknowledgement from the biggest branch within the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences - more than one in five Oscars voters are actors - means Ledger is now the firm favourite to win an Academy Award next month.

Ledger, who died just over a year ago of what officials concluded was an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, would become just the second actor to win a posthumous Oscar after another Australian, Peter Finch, who died of a heart attack months before being awarded the best actor Oscar for Network in 1977.

The Hollywood A-list crowd that filled the Shrine Auditorium - a former home to the Oscars - yesterday gave a standing ovation when Ledger's mesmerising performance as the diabolical Joker was selected.

The award was accepted by Ledger's Dark Knight co-star Gary Oldman, who appeared overcome when arriving on stage.

"I'm quite emotional, wow," the English actor said.

He thanked his fellow actors for giving their highest honour to an extraordinary young man with an extraordinary talent.

"It's wonderful that you have acknowledged that," Oldman said.

The chances of Oscars success for the Indian rags-to-riches love story Slumdog Millionaire were increased when the film won SAG's equivalent of best picture.

Of course, Heath Ledger is going to get the Oscar, of course, he is! The Motion Picture Academy needs to atone for its shame of three years ago, so they are going to give him the Oscar, relieved that he can't be around to say that it was a couple of years too late. But I will never forget the look on Jack Nicholson’s face when he opened the envelope and saw that Crash had won the Best Picture Oscar for 2005. His shocked expression said it all.

Amerika ain’t got no place for dem goddamn fagz! Philip Seymour Hoffman can receive an Oscar for playing a self-loathing queer who drinks-n-dopes himself to death (most stunningly, I must admit), but the idea that the love which dares not speak its name can be true love can NEVAH be tolerated! NEVAH! NEVAH! Let it NEVAH be forgotten that Proposition 8 was passed in California by people who came out to vote for Barack Obama, that Obama gave the invocation at his Inauguration to Pastor Rick Warren, and that, when Bishop Robinson tried to pray at the Lincoln Memorial, the sound system gave out, most mysteriously, so nobody could hear him!

Get to the back of the bus, you damned queers, and cower in shame because you are accursed of God! And if you dare to cause much more trouble for Nazi Ratzi and the Mormon Tabernacle, out will come the tire irons to finish the job! That’ll be the change, not that you can hope for, but that you will get! Yes, WE can, but no, YOU won’t!

We all know why Heath Ledger won the Oscar tonight...

I am sure that his performance in the Batman film was excellent, but we all know why he really won, don't we?

Don't we? And everybody in the auditorium knew it... :( :D

And just in case you didn't get the point the first time, Sean Penn's Oscar for Milk drove the point home rather decisively, didn't it?

Didn't it?

Most decent and respectable 'Merikans believe that Heath Ledger is crackling in the fires of hell this very moment for his involvement in unnatural cinematic perversion. (Actually, from what I hear, Heath is quite alive n well n living on the astral plane. He has an impish habit of getting right in the face of mediums who don't have the slightest idea who he was when he was alive. Heath's message: "life is short so live it to the full!")

Sean Penn, who has been thoroughly repulsive to most decent and respectable Amerikans for quite a number of years now because of his disrespect for the 'Merikan Empire, laid it on with a trowel tonight in his acceptance speech. Now that he has won two Oscars, he is going to be uncontrollable! There will be no stopping him, until, at last, he is found dead in the gutter with a dildo up his, well, you know, on Sarah Palin's coronation day! But until then, he's untouchable. Fred Phelps must be slitting his throat right this very moment!

I just saw Milk. Good film, great performance by Penn.

When, oh when, can threads like this one wither away because gay rights has become no big deal? When?

The planet itself is on the verge of collapse, and yet we waste our time on futile and exhausting fights over sexual orientation. Life is what it is, folks. Legislating against gay behavior will not make the gays go away, and legislating for gay behavior will not make gays under any circumstance more than a small minority.

It's time --- and past time --- to give gays their basic human rights and then to move on. The planet itself needs to be saved from our predation.

Hey, Joe. I did not realize this thread was about gay rights. Thought it was exclusively for Brokeback Mountain - the movie. It probably should be - and a new thread started right here in American Survival for discussion of gay rights. Please consider starting such a thread. I task you for this, as I know your opening post would be eloquent, impassioned and thorough. This is a dialogue I would contribute to.

The Lambert Factor

Post by Linnea » 05-23-2009 05:26 PM

American Idol may have its first openly gay contestant, and while the blogosphere and American voters seem to be saying it doesn’t matter, Dale Hrabi thinks it does.

By Dale Hrabli
From The Advocate [June?] 2009

COMMENTARY: As American Idol’s eighth season has unfolded, I’ve been intrigued by how blasé viewers claim to be about front-runner Adam Lambert’s apparent homosexuality: “It doesn’t matter if he’s gay!!!” strenuously indifferent tweens protested on message boards. “Who cares?!” self-described horny moms declared. Even Monica Crowley, a conservative radio host given to smearing President Obama, gushed, “The gay factor -- if, in fact, this is true -- is not going to have any effect!”

For all its irrelevance, Lambert’s gay factor has been hard to miss. Leaked photos of the hunky, tweezed emo dude smooching another guy have flooded the Web. Videos of his pre-Idol performances hit YouTube, suggesting that he revels in Lycra and enjoys dry-humping male backup dancers. Gossips revealed that shadowy figures in the world of musical theater had recruited the San Diego native as a 10-year-old, casting him in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown as Linus, the only Peanut with a lisp.

While the extraordinarily talented Lambert, 27, hasn’t acknowledged the rumors, he has added more diaphanous scarves to his outfits.

The blogosphere has not been entirely accepting. A few homophobes have boldly pointed out that not only did God not create Adam and Steve, he would never cast a gay man in Wicked (in which Lambert toiled for two years). Although such comments provoked some muddled outrage (“You’re all queer…he’s not gay!”), most bloggers continued to spew tolerance: Who cares, what’s the big deal, it simply doesn’t matter!

I’m not so sure.

A record 97.5 million votes were cast in last year’s Idol finale, more than in the 1996 presidential election. To win Idol you need vast mainstream support of the broadest, most Hallmark-cardish, ham-and-grits sort. For someone as conspicuously unstraight as Lambert to do so would arguably represent change we can believe in.

Inevitably, many of the same Californians who invoked “family values” to deny gays the right to marry have been watching Lambert. They’ve seen his proud parents radiate a reassuring J. Crew banality. They may have grown confused. As if acknowledging this threat, Bill O’Reilly dredged up the Lambert kissing photos on the April 6 edition of his Fox News show, manfully wincing at the prospect that Lambert might win..."

Well, most of us know how this turned out. Adam Lambert was the absolute bombshell talent - and of course lost the American Idol 'vote' - to homophobic America as they chose the 'vanilla' talent.

This is the continuing saga of the BrokeBack Mountain syndrome.

I long for the day - soon I hope - when people are loved and adored, in addition to other talents - because they are gay! We admire women because they are women, men because they are men - and hello world! we should love gays because they are gay.
