High Sea Adventures

For 20 years now I've had a dream of sailing my own boat off into the sunset.

Meg, I don't know if this qualifies but I lived in California off and on most of my life till I was in my 30's. I used to go to the beach 30 times a year at least. We, all my buds and I would swim, bodysurf, boogie board, everything but surf on a board. We slept ate and DRUNK at the beach. Huntington, Malibu, Seal beach and even up north to Ventura and Santa Monica. No real adventures...lotsa parties! :D Just tried to stay one step ahead of the beach patrol and away from the LA County Sherrifs. FUNFUNFUN.

Well, it's been about 20 years since I've even seen the ocean. I've not been to Calif. or any beach in years and I miss it Baad! I'll just have to come and hang here and dream of the salt spray and sand crabs between my toes till I can get back to the shore. Went swimming in Lake Erie. It's big but it ain't no ocean blue.

Lake Erie???

Real cess pool it is. Grew up in Windsor so I know it well. Spent my younger days canoing the lake and sailing an 18' Lazer.:D

That lake is so shallow that when there was a good wind 3 metre waves were a given. Makes canoing interesting:cool:

Gosh, if anyone needs a 'water fix', come visit me. I'm 1-1/2 blocks from the mouth of the Fraser River, a 10 minute drive from a major Ferry crossing of Georgia Strait (@ Tsawwassen)........ had a pod of Killer Whales accompany the ship coming back from my 50th Grad luncheon last month.

My son, next door has a commercial shrimp trawler........ all I've got now is a 8-1/2 dingy in my backyard pond! -- but there's two paddles.

Just can live without water :D

All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by......and the good fortune not to get seasick. :p

CK, my grandson, nextdoor gets seasick..... he's 13, a great hunter, but can't handle the motion on the water.

I asked him a couple of weeks ago "Are you really related to us?" None of my family's never been prone to the queezys..... my son's a commercial fisherman.

I'm here at the Hoag Cancer Clinic in Newport Beach, Calif., and I can see the (a) yacht harbor from where I've comandeered the computer. For years, before I moved to central Mexico, I lived in Puerto Vallarta (late '70s). While I'm pretty good at all kinds of boats, going snorkeling when the sea's a tiny bit rough can really rock my sushi.

This story happened when I was about 1O-12 years old . . . . . .

My grandfather was an extremely avid fisherman. He fished so much, he bought a small 25-foot shimping boat & bait camp just to catch all the bait he needed. Naturally he also sold bait shrimp & food shrimp, crabs, oysters, etc. He taught me a lot about fishing, below and above the water.

One morning, as he, myself and my cousin (about four years younger than me) were out trawling for brown & white shrimp. He nodded toward the horizon and simply said, "game warden's comin'." He had great eyesight on the water, and when I looked out there all I saw was this black dot. But he's the cap'n, and we go with his experience.

Well, eventually the boat gets to us & pulls alongside Grampaw's shrimper, and one of the men aboard asks if he has any bait shrimp to sell. This occasionally happens when a small shrimper has stopped in the water. Grampaw tells him yes, they're five dollars a quart. The man gives him a ten dollar bill and takes two small cardboard buckets with cardboard lids on them. He sets them down in his boat, and then pulls out his badge & identification, announcing that he is indeed a game warden. He asks to come aboard the boat and Grampaw is more than accomodating, pointing out his license, clearly displayed, and allows him free run on the small boat without complaint.

The game warden checks us over, and finds everything to his satisfaction. He and Grampaw even shakes hands, as the game warden thanks him for his cooperation. He steps aboard his boat and his assistant unties from our vessel. As he does that, the game warden offers up the buckets of bait for Grampaw to take back. After all, he's not going to be doing any fishing, is he? Might as well get his money back.

Grampaw looked at the man with calm in his eyes and said, "mister, where I come from, a sale's a sale."

He then turned the wheel to port and gently pushed the throttle forward, thrum-thrum-thrumming the boat away slowly. The game warden stood there, holding two tubs of shrimp, with a confused look on his face. My cousin & I had to go below to keep from laughing in public.

:):D

Dev, I hope for the best for you. And I hope you aren't there alone. If no 'body' is there with you, you know that us pirates here at FF are with you always. :)

Spike, cool story. I hope Grampaw bought something nice with the sawbuck...better yet something illegal. ;)
