Unexplained Noory Ratings

Post by rumike » 12-14-2008 12:03 AM

Morbid curiosity overcame me so I surfed over and looked at Noory's website for his Sci Fi show Unexplained. Here is a blurb from it:
George Noory is the host of the radio program Coast to Coast AM. His show is the most listened to overnight radio program in North America, heard by nearly three million listeners each week on approximately 500 stations in the U.S. and Canada.
Notice the nuance. It doesn't say "...heard by nearly three million listeners a night, it says each week.

Pretty sneaky, sis, but if this is his total for the week, I guess he'd better be transitioning to cable. Or installing cable. Or something.

I am sure that it is just poorly phrased. I hope so anyway.

George Knapp mentioned on two of his recent shows that they only have about 2 millions listeners.......that is bad., don't remember if he said nightly or weekly would have to go back and listen. If it were nightly that is still bad, local shows in the Detroit area have more nightly listeners than that.

Well as a 13+ year loyal listener to coast thru the rough and tumble years of "when will he be back' and having hung on since Art's departure from daily shows I have for the most part stopped listening to GN. I drive at night and am up until 3:30a.m. but now find myself listening to either my recorded shows or something other that GN. If I as veteran listener of coast have given up, how many millions of other 'former coast' have done the same??? It will be sad if coast disappears into the sunset but can it be revived.......

I have never listened to Noory.......but I do think that there are many capable people who could do Coast, of course I would like nothing better to see Art come back, if not weekday nights at least weekends again. First time I heard Art I was driving back to Berkeley, Ca. from Michigan, was on 80 between Salt Lake and Reno about 11:00 PM on May 30, 1994, got hooked that night and listened to him from the Vegas station with the static and fading for about a year and half and then KSFO in San Francisco picked him up and it was heaven.

Talkers Magazine has Noory rated at 26/100 on their Heavy Hundred list.

Heavy Hundred

Their radio listener list has Noory tied in 11th position with 3 million weekly listeners. This number is a sample of national Arbitron reports.

Rush leads the way with 14.25 million weekly listeners as a comparison.

Talk Radio Audiences

From what I gather these numbers are based on a weekly audience average and not a daily average.

I think for the most part radio rating numbers are a lot of smoke and mirrors. If you ask 100 people who George Noory is, 98-99 won't have a clue.

On the other hand if you ask 100 people who Art Bell is about 80% plus know who he is even if they have never listened to him.

I listened to Georgie last night for the first time in a long while. It was hard to believe this was the same guy. It really sounds as if he has given up, the enthusiasm seemed so forced, the interest in the topics even less sincere than I've ever heard from him before.

He sounded to me like a beaten man, waiting for the game to end.
