Protection from radiation would have required heavy shielding, particularly from a gamma dose. I simply don't think the radiation levels were as high as the sceptics are claiming. I'm still waiting to hear them discuss the HAM radio communications, and the part about not finding water is easy- the mission parameters didn't call for finding water. We were doing good to land, plant a flag, bust out the car, pick up some rocks, take some pics & get the hell out of there.
