I wonder sometimes that it might be better that we don't explore space more yet. We are collectively in a rather desperate state right now and that can make for bad behavior. Or am I just being misanthropic again...

Wow. James Van Allen himself stated the radiation would have been a problem. That humans did not have the means of protection from this radiation in 1959. So, the question may yet remain about going through that 'dip' in the radiation belt?

Well we can go to war, or explore space. I'd rather explore really.

Int he article Linnea posted, it states that "a satellite shielded by 3 mm of aluminium in an elliptic orbit (200 by 20,000 miles) passing through the radiation belts will receive about 2,500 rem (25 Sv) per year. Almost all radiation will be received while passing the inner belt." That would break down to a lethal dose in about 2-3 months of constant exposure.

And Linnea, he just wants to chew on the lightsaber beam, nutty cat. :)

Hey, ya, Spike Mike. If you're up really late on Sunday night - Knapp is going to have a good show. We usually listen in to Knapp:

Sunday 25 Oct 09~George Knapp interviews Jim Channon

George Knapp is joined by strategic visionary Jim Channon, who'll discuss his ideas of how to build Global Social Intelligence. He'll also outline 12 breakthroughs of the next decade that will guide our planet toward a brighter future.
