Dutch Farmers Protest Existential Threat From Climate Regulations

Post by Riddick » 07-02-2022 01:33 AM

Furious Dutch farmers brought cows to The Hague and threatened to slaughter the animals on Tuesday in protest of the Netherlands' $26 billion climate plan that could reduce the livestock population by 30%.

The Netherlands, one of Europe's top greenhouse gas emitters, is planning on halving its nitrogen output by 2030, Bloomberg reported. The government plan would shutter some farms, as much of the nitrogen is blamed on manure and fertilizer from cattle.

Hundreds of farmers protested with two cows.

"If the nitrogen measures are adopted, one of these two ladies will not go home, but will receive a one-way ticket to the slaughterhouse," farmer Koos Cromwijk said in front of Parliament, according to Dutch outlet ANP.

The output goal is in compliance with European Union rules to reduce pollution. The Netherlands is the world's second-largest agricultural exporter, per AFP, and some regions of the country will need to cut as much as 95% of emissions.

Farmers protested the measures last week by using their tractors to block traffic.

"It must happen gradually and that's not the case," 74-year-old Jan Poorter told AFP. "You can't just close farms that are hundreds of years old. You just can't!"

The regulations come as some experts predict a global food crisis is weeks away.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has won legal approval to buy a massive swath of prime North Dakota farmland over objections of local residents and questions about the legality of the purchase. The sale also sparked concerns about ultra-rich landowners who may not share the state’s values.

State attorney general Drew Wrigley, a Republican, cleared the sale to Red River Trust after finding the Gates-controlled entity's transaction complies with an anti-corporate Depression-era law meant to protect family farms because the land is being leased back to farmers.

In a recent media interview, Wrigley appeared to downplay the issue, telling the AP he’s not sure “that it’s quite as volatile a situation as some have depicted.” He added his office makes such corporate farming inquiries “as a matter of course.”

“It’s meant to get everybody up to speed on what the ownership arrangement is and what their intentions are for the land,” Wrigley said. “If it complies with state law, the matter goes forward. If not, they’re informed they’re going to have to divest of the land.”

Gates is the fourth-richest man in the world, according to Forbes, and is America’s largest private owner of farmland. Gates made his first public comment about his farmland investments in March 2021, during an “Ask Me Anything” session on the social media platform Reddit.

“Why are you buying so much farmland?” asked one Reddit user. “My investment group chose to do this. It is not connected to climate,” Gates wrote in response.

“The agriculture sector is important. With more productive seeds we can avoid deforestation and help Africa deal with the climate difficulty they already face. It is unclear how cheap biofuels can be but if they are cheap it can solve the aviation and truck emissions,” Gates said.

Gary Hubbell, a real estate broker and accredited land consultant at United Country Ranch Properties in Colorado, said he sees “a lot of resentment and resistance to [Gates’] acquisitions.”

“Not to say that we don’t appreciate people who amass large holdings, because it’s an integral part of our business,” Hubbell told NTD. “But they are no longer really a part of the community, and it seems that Bill Gates, his goals are contrary to many of the established practices and traditions of those communities.”

Gates sparked controversy when he suggested that consumers in wealthy countries should ditch beef and instead switch to “synthetic beef” in an effort to fight climate change.

OK, first Gates sez it's NOT about climate, THEN turns right around & brings up climate difficulties in Africa, and using biofuels to address emissions. Makes one wonder if he's really put all his cards on the table, or has more up his sleeve.

Farmer leasebacks from ultra-rich landowners sure smacks of feudal lordship donchathink?.

Could be just another step in going medieval on all our asses.

Normal People Strike Back! Farmer-Citizen Movement Stuns Dutch Politics

Post by Riddick » 03-20-2023 10:37 AM

in a sign of public dissatisfaction with the socially liberal ruling coalition, a populist party has made huge gains in Dutch elections. The BoerBurgerBeweging (Farmer-Citizen Movement), also known as the BBB, won almost 20 per cent of the vote, giving it 15 seats in the Senate, the upper house of parliament.

The BBB opposes government plans to cut harmful emissions by reducing livestock numbers and buying out farms. However, its remit has broadened to embrace traditional, conservative Dutch social and moral values. These include opposing immigration and calling for a ban on Muslim women wearing the burka.

The result is a big personal victory for Caroline van der Plas, the BBB leader, who told supporters: “This isn’t normal, but actually it is! It’s all normal citizens who voted.” Van der Plas said the result meant an end to “diktat from the Hague” and added: “Nobody can ignore us any longer. Voters have spoken out very clearly against this government’s policies.”

The result was a heavy defeat for prime minister Mark Rutte who, after more than 12 years in the job, is the country’s longest-serving prime minister.
