Key Takeaways From Trump's Effort to Overturn the Election

Matthew Rosenberg and Jim Rutenberg
Mon, February 1, 2021, 7:56 AM
For 77 days between the election and the inauguration, President Donald Trump attempted to subvert American democracy with a lie about election fraud that he had been grooming for years.

A New York Times examination of the events that unfolded after the election shows how the president — enabled by Republican leaders, advised by conspiracy-minded lawyers and bankrolled by a new class of Trump-era donors — waged an extralegal campaign that convinced tens of millions of Americans the election had been stolen and made the deadly Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol almost inevitable.

Interviews with central players, along with documents, videos and previously unreported emails, tell the story of a campaign that was more coordinated than previously understood, even as it strayed farther from reality with each passing day.

Here are some key takeaways:

Interesting piece.............
Rise of the Barstool conservatives

Over the eve of two successive general elections, and they were happy to allow him to appoint 234 judges to the federal bench and sign one tax bill in the first year of his administration. Trump will disappear from the political considerations of Republican elected officials as swiftly as he entered them on the fateful day of the escalator.

A more interesting question is what effect Trump had upon the so-called "conservative movement," that somewhat more nebulous entity, with its magazines, its think tanks and conferences, its canons of half-understood books, its pantheons of gods and heroes. Despite what some have argued, the movement and its institutions have never been synonymous with the Republican Party, which tacitly made its peace with the New Deal when the oldest living Americans were children. What the movement offered the party instead was a kind of geological survey: a map of the sedimentary layers in American political life, and the potential riches waiting to be unearthed by skillful miners of right-wing public opinion.

Like many observers, including an enormous number of the president's loudest detractors, I believe that Trump brought the conservative movement to an end. But what its destruction means is something very different from the prophecies of permanent Democratic supermajorities issuing forth from the former president's critics. Trump's greatest achievement, one that speaks far more than his actual record in office to his business acumen, was recognizing that in the 2012 presidential election, the old movement vein had been exhausted and that a much richer one was awaiting exploration.

And here we thought that the GOP really, really knew the Constitution........

Virginia Sen. Amanda Chase sues over being censured

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia state senator seeking the Republican nomination for governor filed a federal lawsuit Monday that seeks to undo her legislative colleagues’ recent decision to censure her.

In a bipartisan vote last week, the Virginia Senate approved a measure rebuking Sen. Amanda Chase for a “pattern of unacceptable conduct.” The decision followed a long debate that featured scathing criticisms of Chase - a firebrand conservative with a long history of making inflammatory remarks - from both Democrats and Republicans.

In the lawsuit, Chase argues that she is being “singled out and selectively penalized for taking unpopular political positions.”

Chase alleges that she has suffered “public embarrassment, humiliation, mental anguish and loss of seniority” because of the censure and has been “negatively impacted” in her candidacy for higher office.

Democratic Sen. John Bell, who sponsored the censure resolution, said while Chase has the right to seek remedy in the courts, he is confident the court will deny her requests.

Bell introduced the measure after Chase used a floor speech to defend Ashli Babbitt, a woman who was fatally shot by U.S. Capitol Police during the January insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Chase herself is one of many state lawmakers from around the country who attended a rally shortly before the attack on the Capitol, but she was not part of the group that later stormed the building.

Chase had previously called for martial law to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. She repeated former President Donald Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud, and lost access to her Facebook account after falsely blaming leftist activists for the Capitol insurrection.

Too funny................... Read this, and ther very first thing I thought of was The Carpenters'''

McConnell: Marjorie Taylor Greene's views are a 'cancer' for the GOP

CNN)Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell on Monday issued a tacit rebuke of controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, slamming the Georgia Republican's "loony lies and conspiracy theories" as a "cancer" for the party.

"Loony lies and conspiracy theories are cancer for the Republican Party and our country," McConnell said in a statement. "Somebody who's suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shootings were pre-staged, and that the Clintons crashed JFK Jr.'s airplane is not living in reality. This has nothing to do with the challenges facing American families or the robust debates on substance that can strengthen our party."
While McConnell did not name Greene directly, his statement stands as a scathing rebuke of the freshman Republican House member. The Hill first reported on the statement.
Greene quickly shot back on Twitter, asserting that "the real cancer for the Republican Party is weak Republicans who only know how to lose gracefully. This is why we are losing our country."

Trump made a big production of liking this piece of scum so his fans like her too. What she says is irrelevant same as things he says is irrelevant to the cult.

The GOP has a serious problem on their hands. They either (a) ditch Trump and his whack job Q-Anon backers, or (b) be forever known as the party of insurrection with a leader backed by Russia and now openly outed as a known Russian asset who inspired and drove his followers to attach the US Capitol with the goal of killing members of Congress and hanging a sitting Vice President.

One would think that the choice would be an easy one, but.......... the current GOP seems intend on self-inflicting wounds just to keep Trump and his new PACS relevant in order to get themselves re-elected in 2022.

What a trade-off: temporary populism vs the arc of history that will undoubtedly relegate the 2020 version of the GOP to the trash heap.

I hope that the Democrats roll-in witness after witness during the impeachment trial before the Senate so that the world will know that, despite the Q-Anon Trump backers, Proud Boys and other militia groups, that the GOP Senate, on reliving and rehearing this evidence and death threats AGAINST THEM by Trump backers, that they feel it is much more important to try to figure out how to align themselves up like a 747 going in for a landing in their efforts to kiss Trumps ass and garner some super PACS money for 2022 and get those whack-a-doddle Q-Anon votes.

All this butt kissing to defend Comrade Trump...........

Lincoln, Teddy, Reagan and all the rest of past GOP must be rolling in their graves

Gulf grows between GOP's McConnell, McCarthy

The gulf between the two top Republicans on Capitol Hill grew even wider this week after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) took the unusual step of plunging into a pair of controversies that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is struggling to contain in the lower chamber.

In the span of an hour, McConnell issued two separate statements, one condemning the “loony” conspiracy theories of first-term Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), a follower of the pro-Trump QAnon movement; the other praising Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as she faces backlash from former President Trump loyalists after her vote to impeach the 45th president.

Those dynamics have created a rare and growing rift between the top GOP leaders across chambers at the very moment when Republicans are trying to unite against the ambitious legislative agenda of the new Democratic president, Joe Biden.

Both the Greene and Cheney issues have created migraines for McCarthy, a close Trump ally caught between the House Republicans still defending the former president following the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and those warning that only a clean break from the mercurial Trump will save the Republican Party from devouring itself.

McConnell’s extraordinary decision to insert himself into those debates — and to do it so aggressively — not only places him squarely in the latter camp, but also applies enormous pressure on McCarthy to join him there. And McConnell is hardly alone; other top Senate Republican voices are also seeking to shift the party’s focus away from its more fringe elements, represented by Greene, and back to the institutionalist mindset embodied by Cheney.
