Haven't gotten any emails from you lately, Sharri, but the same email address works.
The ICOM 706 MKII is a great little radio. A lot of power and many features usually found only in the higher price class. This model also has the DSP Unit, I believe. I remember Art talking on the radio a few years back about what a great little rig it was for the money.
Seems strange you do not have many 'talkers' on the 2 meter repeaters there. It is the band of choice for mobile operations just about everywhere. Have you checked out the 2 meter repeaters in your area? That is where most of the traffic is.
I knew you said you were about to take the General exam, and there are more opportunities on those bands as well. There is no longer a 'code' requirement to get the General license, so it shouldn't be too difficult.
Go for it!
Sorry to hear your quad antenna blew down in high winds. Gotta have 'ears'. When you get back and set up your J-Pole, you might want to check out 'Moon Bounce'.

Have fun on your travels, Sharri - and be sure to post when you can.
