The 550 error is usually associated with a block. Did you get that error when E-mailing someone, or when they try to e-mail you? If it's a normal 550 error on someone else's server, in the header there is usually a line which tells why. Most of the sending errors are caused by the recipient's mail server not accepting reverse look-up DNS conflicts or because some service has your ISP or IP range blocked.

check to see if you are a zombie------how many messages try to go out when you connect? If so you might be blacklisted by your isp. Has your connection been hijacked---IE does the mail try to go out thru a proxy? Firewall blocking your port 25 or 110? Virus scanner locking the connection? ( common with nortons) A "cannot connect to server" error is usually a misconfig in your options, by accident or nefarious design.

I am certainly not a computer savvy person either spiritme, but I got the same message once while trying to access Outlook Express. This occurred after a crash, and my firewall reset to block OE. Fortunately my firewall informed me of this fact when I tried to access my mail, but some firewalls may not tell you that the settings have changed. Even then, with my firewall telling me of the setting change, I was not geeky enough to figure it out immediately (as my friends who were trying to email me willl attest). Duh! for me. Anyhoo, you may want to check your firewall settings.

PS: The MS error messages always confuzalate me.

Ditch OE and get Thunderbird. Or, better yet, get gmail. I used OE for years but switched to T-bird about a year ago and have none of the proprietary problems I had with OE. But I started using gmail with 2.5 gigs of storage and like the convienience of that much better. There's also a new Hotmail beta out that looks interesting and Yahoo is working on one too. Web-mail is great.
