The Dot Com Domain Turned 30

Post by Riddick » 03-16-2015 11:11 PM

On March 15, 1985, the first ever .com domain was registered by Symbolics, a computer manufacturer. Symbolics the company is no longer of this earth, but Symbolics.com lives on.

And what better way to celebrate .com's birthday than by opening up .sucks for business?

weird domain to register, you'd think you would want something like food.com or porn.com :)

In 1994 we had computers at my place of employment for record keeping, word processing and bookkeeping etc. That year the Gov sent a liaison up to our organization to explain the Internet to us. All I remember her telling us is how email would work and how this new information hwy would change the world regarding business. At the time it kind of scared me because she was using the term dot.com and dial up etc., and I remember sitting there wondering if I would have the smarts to learn and use this technology. The feeling was like being 9 months pregnant, as I knew there was going to be no way out of it.

That first year or so was frustrating as we were forced to rely on it and it took quite awhile to get the bugs out. I'm sure that decade was the beginning of the eff word working its way into everyday conversation by all and sundry. :D
