Is this the party to whom I'm speaking?

Post by Fred_Vobbe » 09-26-2005 07:15 PM

While I was off this weekend doing some volunteer work, I ran into a most interesting fellow who is also a pilot, and an ex Phone Phreak.

For those of you that don't know that term, Phone Phreaking was given to someone who tried to exploit the telephone networks to get free calls, access to information, etc. Basically your telephone black hat hackers of yesteryear.

We got on the subject of Coast to Coast, space, radio, and other topics. I sure wish I would have had my Scoopman minidisc with me because I could have gotten a good interview for George.

During the conversation he gave me a few numbers, scribbled on the back of a bank receipt, which are interesting. These are called "V-Circuits". They are numbers you call to get information or "listen in". Here's a few.

To hear the status of a NASA space shot: 1-321-867-2525

To hear NASA audio during a mission: 1-321-867-1220, 867-1240, or 867-1260. He also mentioned 1-321-867-2525 as being in this group as well.

To listen to his hometown radio station, KHLP-1420, which is a All Help And Motivation Station, 1-402-573-0130.

To listen to a new talk network called "Gab Net" 1-303-682-2878.

To listen to Seattle City Council during meetings (just what Linnea needs) 1-206-684-8566.

And we'll save the geekiest for last. There is a group in Washington state that records songs about Ham Radio. They call themselves the Ham Band. If you would like to listen to their songs call, 1-206-600-1083.

These calls are long distance, but if you have one of the IP services like I do where all calls to North America are free, it's fun to camp on a line and listen. FWIW, I have Packet8 (http://www.packet8.net) and it's OK. The upside is $22 p/month unlimited calls NA. Down side is that it's IP telephone, so you get some latency in calls, some dialing delay, and no E911 service. I suppose Vontage and other are the same.

I called the NASA numbers and also the Ham Band numbers, but I've not checked the rest of them. Frankly, I'm tired from this weekend, getting home real early in the morning, and having to get up early this morning. The 321-867-2525 said there were no present missions, but gave some info on what's happening next.

On our next show we'll talk about virtual numbers, IP telephones, PBX, and how I have a phone in Mt Ranier WA. George Noory will be in for me tonight on Coast. Goodnight, 73, & GUD DX.

Coincidentally, I'm reading The Art of Intrusion by Kevin Mitnick right now.

Highly, highly recommended! ;)

I thought you were talking about Lily Tomlin with her Laugh In bit.

That's what I was thinking about when I posted that.

God bless Lily. Great stuff. Now all we need is Arnie on his trike. A time when TV was entertaining.

I've got to get back in touch with the fellow I met and get some more telephone numbers from him. Some were pretty cool.

Actually it wasn't Laugh In, met to say Saturday Night Live which used to be very funny, haven't watched it in years.
