What is this doodad?
The Codegen cases I've bought have a thingy that I have no clue what it is for. I took it to work and showed it to a guy there who has built computers, and he thought maybe it was a speaker.
It is a black cylindrical thing, with a hole in one end that has a plus sign on it and metal down in the hole. The other end has pigtails labeled plus and minus.
I found a picture to give you an idea what I am talking about here:

It is the thing top center.
Kind of hard to google something when you don't know what it is called.

Damned if I know what it is, but I thought an image might help.
Yup, that is it.
I feel like the Cat in Red Dwarf.
"What is it?" Be careful not to use big words to me if someone knows the answer, or I'll keep repeating "What is it?"
Pam:)

It's a piezo speaker. It's really only good for hearing the "beep" as the computer boots, etc.

What the heck you gonna do with DOS these days? Also, your son has a BSD type subsystem, not UNIX.
If you have one like that in your system, and you are sick of the beeps, just pull one end out after noting carefully where it had been plugged.
They are actually usually much smaller that that, and are about the size of a pencil eraser.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean someone isn't following you...
Speaker
Yes...I agree. This is what is being sold as a "speaker" these days. There are two leads that connect to the motherboard with polarity marked, etc. A piezo is a crystal that emits sound when exposed to electricity. The crystal also can produce electricity when exposed to pressure. The crystal concept is what a phonograph needle does - the grooves of the vinyl compress the crystal to produce electricity that is analogous to the master recording that pressed the vinyl. In any case the piezo element is used as a speaker.
