The Untwisted History of the Statue of Liberty

Post by Doka » 01-31-2017 02:48 PM

It is my understanding that some People as well as Famous People have an incorrect view that Lady Liberty was meant to be The Statue of Immigration NOT TRUE!

"Lady Liberty" stands on LIBERTY ISLAND..........NOT to be confused with Ellis Island, which was where the Immigrants came to .

The French Connection

Quotes:

"The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French people commemorating the alliance of France and the United States during the American Revolution. Yet, it represented much more to those individuals who proposed the gift."

In 1865, Edouard de Laboulaye(a French political thinker, U.S. Constitution expert, and abolitionist) proposed that a monument be built as a gift from France to the United States in order to commemorate the perseverance of freedom and democracy in the United States and to honor the work of the late president Abraham Lincoln. Laboulaye hoped that by calling attention to the recent achievements of the United States, the French people would be inspired to create their own democracy in the face of a repressive monarchy. In 1865, France was divided between people who were still committed to the monarchy and people who supported the Enlightenment ideals (the belief that people had natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness). It was the hope of many French liberals that democracy would prevail and that freedom and justice for all would be attained.

Who Paid for The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France, and the copper statue was, for the most part, paid for by French citizens.

However, the stone pedestal upon which the statue stands on an island in New York Harbor was paid for by Americans, through a fund-raising drive organized by a newspaper publisher, Joseph Pulitzer.

Quotes From Article

When the Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, the ceremonial speeches had nothing to do with immigrants arriving in America.

And the sculptor who created the enormous statue, Fredric-Auguste Bartholdi, never intended the statue to evoke the idea of immigration. In a sense, he viewed his creation as something nearly opposite: as a symbol of liberty spreading outward from America.

So how and why did the statue become an iconic symbol of immigration?

Emma Lazarus won the contest, after her death, approx 17 years after original dedication of the Statue of Liberty.......Her intent of the poem was for her Jewish People......Oh the Irony!

Some more about Emma Lazerus.....

Quotes

Emma Lazarus was a native New Yorker, the daughter of a wealthy Jewish family with roots going back several generations in New York City.

By that time the statue had been standing in the harbor for nearly 17 years, and millions of immigrants had passed by it. And for those fleeing oppression in Europe, the Statue of Liberty did seem to be holding a torch of welcome.

====================================================

Looking back on intent, and history, has been twisted into something else :?: The current Leaders of France have given up on their quest for Liberty. And Emma, whose was ever concerned about the Welfare of The Jewish People, is no doubt spinning in her grave, from knowing many in this country want to protect, the very "radicalism", that wants her people dead. That is about as pure "Irony" as you, can get........
