Terence, A Happy Belated Birthday!

Post by IvyQ » 11-27-2006 08:09 PM

Terence Kemp McKenna (November 16, 1946 – April 3, 2000) was a writer and philosopher. He was notable for his many speculations on subjects ranging from the Voynich Manuscript to the origins of the human species to Novelty theory, which claims time to be a fractal wave of increasing novelty, which culminates dramatically in 2012. His concept appeared to involve a combination of hallucinogenic chemical agents, Gaianism, and shamanism.

Terence McKenna grew up in a small, highly religious town in western Colorado. Unusually poor eyesight forced him to wear bifocals at an early age. This and his nonathletic nature made him an outcast, and he spent much of his childhood alone. He was introduced to the subject of geology by his uncle and developed a hobby of solitary fossil hunting in the arroyos near his home. From this he developed a deeply artistic and scientific appreciation of nature.

McKenna was first informed of psychedelics by the writings of Aldous Huxley. His first direct experience with them came when he ate several packets of commercially produced morning glory seeds, an experience he claimed set the direction of his life.

After graduating from high school, McKenna enrolled in U.C. Berkeley. He moved to San Francisco in The Summer Of Love before his classes began, and was introduced to cannabis and LSD by Barry Melton, who happened to be rooming in the apartment opposite his.

In 1969 Terence received a B.S. in Ecology and Conservation from the Tussman Experimental College, a short-lived outgrowth of the Berkeley campus. He spent the years after his graduation teaching English in Japan, traveling through India and south Asia;

Following the death of his mother in 1971 Terence, his brother Dennis, and three others traveled to the Colombian Amazon in search of oo-koo-hé, a plant preparation containing DMT. At La Chorrera, at the urging of his brother, he allowed himself to be the subject of a psychedelic experiment which he claimed put him in contact with Logos: an informative, hallucinatory voice he believed was universal to visionary religious experience. The revelations of this voice prompted him to explore the structure of an early form of the I Ching, which led to his Novelty Theory.

For most of the 1970s McKenna maintained a low profile, living in a nondescript suburban home, supporting his lifestyle with the royalties from the Magic Mushroom Growers Guide, and the cultivation and sale of psilocybin mushrooms. He said that he was frightened out of this line of work, and into public speaking by the harsh penalties the war on drugs exacted from his colleagues.

McKenna was a contemporary and colleague of Ralph Abraham, Rupert Sheldrake, and Riane Eisler and participated in joint workshops and symposiums with them. He was a personal friend of Tom Robbins, and influenced the thought of numerous scientists, writers, artists, and entertainers.

He became a fixture of popular counterculture in his later years. Timothy Leary once introduced him as “the real Tim Leary”. He contributed to psychedelic and goa trance albums by The Shamen, Spacetime Continuum, Zuvuya and Shpongle, and his speeches were sampled by many others. In 1993 he appeared as a speaker at the Starwood Festival, which was documented in the book Tripping by Charles Hayes[1] (his lectures were produced on both cassette tape and CD). He was a skilled orator, and admired by his fans for his eloquence. While some of his presentations included verbatim repetitions of earlier material, his gift for extemporaneous speech allowed him to weave them into seamless performances that varied audience to audience. His responses to novel questions were usually as sophisticated and subtle as his prepared speech.

In addition to psychedelic drugs, McKenna spoke on the subjects of virtual reality (which he saw as a way to artistically communicate the experience of psychedelics), 'techno-paganism,' artificial intelligence, evolution, extraterrestrials, ancestor-worship (or, as he put it, contacting 'dead people'), and aesthetic theory (art/visual experience as 'information,' hence the significance of hallucinatory visions experienced under the influence of psychedelics). He advised the taking of psychedelics in relatively-to-extremely large doses (asserting that those who had only sampled psychedelics in small doses failed to access their full potential), particularly alone, in a dark space, without music or other forms of external stimulation. Philosophically and religiously, he expressed admiration for Marshall McLuhan, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Gnostic Christianity, and James Joyce (calling Finnegans Wake the best literary representation of the psychedelic experience). He remained opposed to all forms of organized religion or guru-based forms of spiritual awakening. He believed DMT was the apotheosis of the psychedelic experience and spoke of the 'jeweled, self-dribbling basketballs' or 'self-transforming machine elves' that one encounters in that state. Although he avoided giving his allegiance to any one interpretation (part of his rejection of both monotheism and monogamy), he was open to the idea of psychedelics as being 'trans-dimensional travel, literally,' enabling an individual to encounter what could be aliens, ghosts/ancestors, or spirits of the earth.

McKenna also co-founded Botanical Dimensions with Kathleen Harrison (his colleague and wife of 17 years), a non-profit ethnobotanical preserve on the Island of Hawaii, where he lived for many years before he died. Before moving to Hawaii permanently McKenna split his time between Hawaii and a town called Occidental, located in the redwood-studded hills of Sonoma County, California a town unique for its high concentration of artistic notables, including Tom Waits and Mickey Hart.

McKenna died in 2000 of glioblastoma multiforme, a highly aggressive form of brain cancer. He was 53 years old. He is survived by his brother Dennis, his son Finn, and his daughter Klea.

The "Stoned Ape" theory of human evolution...
Perhaps the most intriguing of Terence McKenna's theories and observations is his explanation for the origin of the human mind and culture. McKenna theorizes that as the North African jungles receded toward the end of the most recent ice age, giving way to grasslands, a branch of our tree-dwelling primate ancestors left the branches and took up a life out in the open—following around herds of ungulates, nibbling what they could along the way.

Among the new items in their diet were psilocybin-containing mushrooms growing in the dung of these ungulate herds. The psilocybin -- which in small doses provides an increased visual acuity, in slightly larger doses a physical sexual arousal and in still larger doses full-on ecstatic hallucinations and glossolalia -- gave evolutionary advantages to those tribes who partook of it. The changes caused by the introduction of this drug to the primate diet were many—McKenna theorizes, for instance, that synesthesia (the blurring of boundaries between the senses) caused by psilocybin led to the development of spoken language: the ability to form pictures in another person's mind through the use of vocal sounds.

About 12,000 years ago, further climate changes removed the mushroom from the human diet, resulting in a new set of profound changes in our species as we reverted to pre-mushroomed and brutal primate social structures that had been modified and/or repressed by frequent consumption of psilocybin.

McKenna's theory has intuitive strength, but it is necessarily based on a great deal of supposition interpolating between the few fragmentary facts we know about hominid and early human history. In addition, because McKenna (who described himself as "an explorer, not a scientist") was also a proponent of much wilder suppositions, such as his "Timewave Zero" theory, his more reasonable theories are usually disregarded by the very scientists whose informed criticism is crucial for their development. A live recording of his "Stoned Ape" theory can be found on the CD Conversations on the Edge of Magic (recorded live at the Starwood Festival).

The Alchemy of the Soul

Post by IvyQ » 12-11-2006 10:42 AM

The Alchemy of the Soul

This alchemical text is one of the oldest surviving alchemical manuscipts from the Egyptian Mystery schools and according to experts dates to around 2649–2150 B.C.
The water of skies can be used, for it as been through the highest purification there can be. The one that stands above us where all things happen in a powerful and infinite perfection that truly rises above earthly matters or even our own understanding before we are purified and capable of seeing everything as it really is.

A few Blessed ones have been walking among us, complete, throughout the ages, because the purified child coming out of their souls was considered wise enough to be embraced as son or daughter of the skies, who will now provide them all the help and answers they may need based upon the natural love between parents and children, which will lead them into even higher ways of knowledge as a circle that never end or truly begins.

To be a part of the highest circles the recipe shall be followed in detail, but be aware the laws of the highest kingdoms won't look upon your fortune or those with whom you are related. Be you a slave or a king, a musician or an artisan. Be naked before the sacred fire that burns without burning, that exists without consuming.

Know your rules mean nothing to all the things that created themselves permanently, because you are only a half of who you are. Until you are complete you will follow by need, the rules of man, until you are complete and start to follow the rules of everything else, that by its purity seems so simple to you although by its perfection is far beyond your judgement.

You may seek those white lords, upon their white realms, that stand between your world and the one of the gods, deciding by their own will when to stay, when to go. And yes, let me tell you their privilege is a rare gift upon this earth that guides them by the laws of the eternal creation. Their secret is no other than being children of the rain, being that water coming down from the sky only to return to it after. The circle that never breaks. No beginning. No end.

One step away from freedom though you shall be. Oh white lord, because among your learning about the nature of true things you have learned that their infinite permanence is nothing else but another stage of the way, the one that stands before becoming everything.

White Lords followers of the Supreme word of Amon who has chosen to be everything after creating himself forever. The red essence shall remain unknown for you until you become a follower of the form of Amon, for you shall know when reaching the white state all the answers to take you forward, therefore it is forbidden to speak of what you shall know when reaching the condition of knowing, or you would never wish to reach there. Having the knowledge is not being. The wise shall know it, the one who is not ready will turn back.

If you are looking for the White (word missing, presume it might be "realm or kingdom" by the last and only symbol) Know that first you will find it in your mind for the dwelling place of the shinning ones. It is not a door you can step in and out everyday.

The Journey starts, you cannot look back. If you look back you are not sure, if you not sure you cannot chose. Know that when you became a White one, you will see things on this earth, that are not there to reach the eye of the ordinary man.

You will see what you thought it was not (missing word, but almost sure it is -"there"- by the first symbol). Bind yourself with this illusion and you shall never cross the path of light. Believe the heart, more than the eyes, for the eyes, they follow reason and reason is based upon what ordinary men see; they do not see all that is there, so reason is in part a lie.

If you follow a lie you will never get to a true place. Mark my words apprentice, I have been there. In the dwelling-place of White Lords were the doors are opened to the stars, when they chose to open them, for they have transcended death, though are waiting still to be everything following the trace of the great Amon. Red shall be know as the heart, and you shall know what lays in there, follow it, this map usually never fails.

The circle of the water, of the rain, everything is hidden there and in the supreme golden. You shall hold the never ending circle in your hands of the water, of the water, let it be, the water knows what to do, it will give birth to the original blue, that you shall not see, let the white sand of the Gods stand in the middle. You shall find the sand of the gods within the Supreme Golden, ask for it and wait, do not fear, do not be unsure, change the red essence for the dark one of reason and nothing shall come out of it.

The white sand is food for time, offer it to both, and you shall be immortal, time will have is share, it will disappear and in return you shall see the door and it shall open for you. In the dwelling place of the starts without a noise, without a sound.

Follow the Great Serpent of water, that you shall see from the sky, until you see the three steps of the gods coming out of the water, there, in the middle there is the resting place of the supreme Amon on earth, the awaken lord, the one that never sleeps, whose mind never sleeps, whose heart shines forever. If you (missing word but believe it is- step) inside the cave, the temple, the answer to your search, know that you are far from the end, but the time you take to reach it, is a part of you. Be you the master of the change, time is a servant.

Know that for long, the golden lord has gone forward, left his shadow behind so that it could follow him if it wanted, so that he could be followed if it wanted.

Sons and daughters of Nuit who carry the shadow, to pass beyond the shrine of Amon the Supreme father. Hidden in the shadow there are the three gifts of Nuit the blessed mother, the three gifts of Amon the shining father and the one which is of men, the red of life.

Below the earth, inside the first temple of the first gift of Nuit, the blessed mother, you shall find the fountain for the miracle.

Below the earth, inside the (second?) temple of the second (gift?) of Nuit, the blessed mother, you shall find both serpent and egg and the precious gem for those who know the secret of leading the source to the receptacle.

Below the earth, inside the third (temple of the?) third gift of Nuit, (the blessed mother?) you (shall?) find and the strength to follow.

Above the earth, below the sky, inside the temple of men, the only one, the gift of men, you shall find the wish to follow and the beauty of following.

Above the sky, inside the first temple of the first gift of Amon, the shinning father, you shall find the word to heal and to put away all demons.

Above the sky, inside the second temple of the second gift of Amon, the shinning father, you shall find the knowledge behind the word.

Above the sky, inside the third temple of the third gift of Amon, the shinning father, you shall find the gate and the path after it.

When Re rises in the east, follow the path of the white lords, to the west.

Spiritual Faith

==========

With spiritual faith, your heart and mind open up and guide you in your search for personal truth. Faith in the spirituality of life is what makes your spiritual path possible.

Faith may sound like a form of belief, but belief is actually a fixation upon a version of the truth. When a belief becomes rigid, seeking and growth are not possible. For example, the biggest challenge facing quantum physics today is the enormous shift that is required from previous beliefs about the nature of reality. Researchers have to shift to a new view where time, space and physicality are liberated from the constraints which people previously believed that they had.

If you believe that you exist in a fixed location in space and that time must always pass you by like clockwork, think again.
Subatomic particles do not share your beliefs about time and space. They take a much more liberated view. Subatomic
particles pop in and out of physical manifestation millions of times per second, just when and where they feel like it. Their disregard for time is perplexing, to say the least, as they respond immediately to events in their future and even time travel backwards to alter their past when it suits them.

Now, we can all identify with the idea of creating a different future based on decisions that we make now, but creating a
different past? Well, that's what subatomic particles do, right there in the lab. As a result, in the mathematics of quantum physics today, one of the necessary tools is negative time - the ability of a particle to send a message into its past in order to change its own history.

Subatomic particles are friendly by nature. When they bump into another particle that they take a liking to, and they seem to like all of them, they become friends and carry on communicating with each other, for ever. The fact that they may become separated by millions of miles does not reduce their willingness to communicate.

The speed of their communications comes as a surprise. Einstein said that nothing exceeds the speed of light, but apparently
subatomic particles weren't listening when he said that. They communicate over huge distances virtually instantly. If there
is a limit to the speed of transmitted thought, then that speed of thought has to be millions of times faster than the speed of light.

Subatomic particles, by their very freedom, serve to remind us of our true potential as conscious beings in a conscious universe. We are limited only by our personal collection of beliefs, our belief system. We also share our part of a larger, societal belief system, the consensus reality.

With spiritual faith - an open heart and an open mind - we can discover more about today's New Reality and what it means to humanity. Discovering more about life expands our view of reality and evolves our belief systems. Besides, and this is
what really counts, it's fun!

Terence McKenna's Ex-Library
"For those who knew Terence or enjoyed his library, the fire is a tragedy, and not simply because it consumed his private papers. Terence's library reflected the multidimensional facets of his own mind: mysticism and history, drugs and dreams, science fiction and systems theory, natural history and art. Terence was a head who fed his head with books more than the drugs he became known for"

Psychedelics is such a rare field of inquiry that the magnitude of this loss is just so huge. I don’t know what else to say. Damn! We still have his own works, reproductions at best. Best keep them close at hand.
