Do you think we will stay in Iraq if a civil war breaks out?

Post by mahram » 12-28-2005 03:40 PM

I was wondering if you guys think we will stay in iraq if a civil war breaks out? Do you think we will take sides? And will we take on the majority shia casts? The shia are the more religious factions in iraq.

I don't think we will wait for a civil war to move to Iran.

well that was one of my scenerios. If there is a civil war, and we are stuck in the middle. We will want to blame people or countries. Domestically Im sure bush would blame the moderates and democrats for everything thats gone wrong. And he would want to blame the syrians and iranians. All of the countries sourrounding iraq is jocking for place right now, and picking sides. Its going tobe a mess. if we decide to bomb iran b/c they are going to supply arms, then god help us.

We are going to stay in Iraq until we are driven out at the point of a bayonet, civil war or no civil war.

yeah but if we stay in during a civil war, the death toll to date would look small compared to what will happen during a civil war. I dont think america can handle the death rates of vietnam anymore. During a civil war we could be hearing 50 causualty a day. Thats my fear. And when we start picking sides, then all hell is going to break lose. Can you imagine us picking the religious zelot side, the shia side. They are aligned with iran. But they are the majority in iraq. If we dont, then what can we do?

The side chosen by America would be the side most friendly to the oil and corporate interests. IMO.

yeah but are we going to pick the religious shia over the other moderates. And if the kurds decide to make their own homeland in the north, thats going to make iran irate. What are we going todo if iran bomb the kurds. Are we going to strike right at iran. Its going tobe a mess this year. and dont get me started if a civil war breaks, everything will be about control of the oil fields.

troop withdrawal is going on in Iraq - slow........but going on.

The leader of Iran wants to wipe Isreal off the map, told Russi to more or less to to - after first getting missiles from them, telling others they will do what they want with those nuke facilities - more or less told UN to go to... NOT GOOD!

But as for Iraq and civil war... there is nothing civil about war.

but we are going down from 150K to 120K. And thats b/c they are sending home people who have been there for more then 3 years. And extending people tours. Its not a troop withdrawal. Its more of a political show then anything else. To the moderates, they can go see we are bringing home the troops to the conservatives they can see with are only bringing home people who have been there for 3 years.

"Definitely a civil war," expert says of conflict

Post by SETIsLady » 01-03-2006 06:58 AM

Tuesday, January 3, 2006

James Fearon, a Stanford University political scientist and an authority on modern conflicts, believes Iraq's civil war began almost as soon as Saddam Hussein was ousted, and that it is disguised and partly held back by the presence of foreign forces.

"I think there is definitely a civil war that has been going on since we finished the major combat operations," Fearon said. "When people talk about 'Will there be a civil war?' they are really talking about a different type of civil war."

The kind of civil war emerging in Iraq, characterized by guerrilla attacks, kidnappings, assassinations and "ethnic cleansing," is typical of modern civil wars, Fearon said.

"Since 1945, almost all civil wars, a big plurality, have been guerrilla wars where it is kind of insurgency versus counterinsurgency," he said. "Most civil wars look more like what we are seeing in Iraq now."

The presence of U.S. troops in the conflict would not be unusual, he said. "A great number [of civil wars] have involved foreign intervention. But I would still call it a civil war on grounds that the insurgents are attacking and killing far more Iraqis than U.S. troops."

Although Fearon sees the recent election as a possible positive step, he thinks the war among Iraqis could widen and intensify into open communal fighting on a larger scale, particularly if withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country is too rapid.

mahran -- dunno - some of the ones who returned home in our area had only been there a year, some as long as 18 months.

= = =
Now as for how long the civil war has been going on - well gee saddam killed the kurds wholesale slaughter - to end any civil war, then killed thousands upon thousands - bodies found in mass graves. Civil war - mass killing of any who opposed.

...and now the minority group who lost power is complaining. Yes there will be a civil war of some kind - hopefully it will be more a war of words, but thats asking too much....

well its hard to say. Alot of the troops returning home are in their 2nd or 3rd tour of duty. So when they say they have been there only for a year, it doesnt include how many tours they have done so far. If you only been home for 3-4 months then your called back.
