The Last Woolworth's Lunch Counter

Post by Riddick » 11-22-2019 03:42 AM

Just a generation or two ago, Woolworth was a household name. Frank Woolworth literally created the modern retail big box store model, and at its height, the chain had nearly 5,000 locations domestically and abroad, with hundreds across the U.S. servicing communities otherwise devoid of one-stop stores.

Roaming general-purpose dime stores with carts and taking their selected items to the cashier for purchase was an all new experience for late 19th century shoppers. In the 20th century, many Woolworth's opened in-store dining counters and candy stands to further make sure a customer’s needs were always being met.

After the 1960s amidst increasing competition and declining sales, Woolworth sold off most of its assets before its 1997 insolvency. Yet, while the stores themselves are all long gone, an authentic Woolworth’s Luncheonette experience lives on. FULL STORY
