Songs That Have Meaning

Down To You

Everything comes and goes
Marked by lovers and styles of clothes
Things that you held high
And told yourself were true
Lost or changing as the days come down to you
Down to you
Constant stranger
You're a kind person
You're a cold person too
It's down to you
It all comes down to you.

You go down to the pick up station
Craving warmth and beauty
You settle for less than fascination
A few drinks later you're not so choosy
When the closing lights strip off the shadows
On this strange new flesh you've found
Clutching the night to you like a fig leaf
You hurry
To the blackness
And the blankets
To lay down an impression
And your loneliness.

In the morning there are lovers in the street
They look so high
You brush against a stranger
And you both apologize
Old friends seem indifferent
You must have brought that on
Old bonds have broken down
Love is gone.
Oooh, love is gone
Written on your spirit this sad song
Love is gone.

Everything comes and goes
Pleasure moves on too early
And trouble leaves too slow
Just when you're thinking
You've finally got it made
Bad news comes knocking
At your garden gate
Knocking for you
Constant stranger
You're a brute-you're an angel
You can crawl-you can fly too
It's down to you
It all comes down to you.

"The mind is the limit. As long as the mind can envision the fact that you can do something, you can do it, as long as you really believe it 100 percent." - Arnold Schwarzenegger

MAGIC
Pilot, 1974

Ho, ho, ho
It's Magic!
You know -
Never believe
it's not so -
It's magic, you know
Never believe it's not so...

Never been awake
Never seen a day break
Leaning on my pillow in the morning
Lazy day in bed
Music in my head
Crazy music playing in the morning light

I love my sunny day
Dream of far away
Dreaming on my pillow in the morning
Never been awake
Never seen a day break
Leaning on my pillow in the morning light

Ho, ho, ho
It's Magic!
You know -
Never believe
it's not so -
It's magic, you know
Never believe it's not so...!

"Learned helplessness is the giving-up reaction, the quitting response that follows from the belief that whatever you do doesn't matter... What I'm doing is the thing I want to do. I don't care what other people think. If the rest of the world disagrees & says I shouldn't waste my time, I still will be a bodybuilder." - Ah-nold

ALL STAR
Smash Mouth, 1999

Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead

Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

Chorus:
Hey now you're an All Star - get your game on, go play
Hey now you're a Rock Star - get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

It's a cool place and they say it gets colder
You're bundled up now but wait 'til you get older
But the meteor men beg to differ
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture

The ice we skate is getting pretty thin
The waters getting warm so you might as well swim
My world's on fire how about yours
That's the way I like it and I never get bored
[Repeat Chorus x 2]

Somebody once asked could you spare some change for gas
I need to get myself away from this place
I said yep what a concept
I could use a little fuel myself
And we could all use a little change --

Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

[Repeat Chorus]

"I've made a living out of a pastime, which perhaps only 5% of the population can do. The other 95% are frustrated office workers, working for someone else. I'm totally independent. So, I ... feel ... if I would live again ... or if I would be born again I would do exactly the same thing." - You-know-who, ya?

BREAKOUT
Swing Out Sister, 1987

When explanations make no sense
When every answer's wrong
You're fighting with lost confidence
All expectations come
The time has come to make or break
Move on don't hesitate
Breakout

Chorus:
Don't stop to ask
Now you've found a break to make at last
You've got to find a way
Say what you want to say
Breakout

When situations never change
Tomorrow looks unsure
Don't leave your destiny to chance
What are you waiting for
The time has come to make your break

Breakout
[Chorus x 2]

Some people stop at nothing
If you're searching for something
Lay down the law
Shout out for more
Breakout and shout day in day out
Breakout
[Chorus x 2]

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS
Queen, 1977

I've paid my dues
Time after time
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime
And bad mistakes
I've made a few
I've had my share of sand
Kicked in my face
But I've come through

And we mean to go on and on and on and on

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting
Till the end

We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the World

I've taken my bows
And my curtain calls
You brought me fame and fortune
And everything that goes with it
I thank you all
But it's been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise
I consider it a challenge before
The whole human race
And I ain't gonna lose

And we mean to go on and on and on and on

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting
Till the end

We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the World

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting
Till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions

"Dear God"
by XTC

Dear God", hope you got the letter, and...
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
but all the people you made in your image, see them starving on their feet 'cause
they don't get enough to eat from God,
I can't believe in you.

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but...
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
and all the people that you made in your image, see them fighting in the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God,
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease? And the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you? And the devil too!
don't know if you noticed, but... your name is on a lot of quotes in this book,
and us crazy humans wrote it,
you should take a look,
and all the people that you made in your image still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it ain't, and so do you, dear God,

I can't believe in
I don't believe in
I won't believe in
heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
You're always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and
it's the same the whole world 'round.
The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax, and if you're up
there you'd perceive that my heart's here upon my sleeve.

If there's one thing I don't believe in

...it's you....

Joan Osborne
Relish (1995)
One Of Us

If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to His face
If you were faced with Him in all His glory
What would you ask if you had just one question

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home

If God had a face, what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like Heaven and in Jesus and the Saints
And all the Prophets and...

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home

Tryin' to make His way home
Back up to Heaven all alone
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home

Just tryin' to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to Heaven all alone
Just tryin' to make his way home
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome

Two truly great songs that deserve never to be forgotten...

Paul McCartney, "Here, There and Everywhere":

"To lead a better life

I need my love to be here...

Here, making each day of the year,

Changing my life with a wave of her hand...

Nobody can deny that there's something there.

There, running my hands through her hair...

Both of us thinking how good it can be,

Someone is speaking but she doesn't know he's there.

I want her everywhere,

And if she's beside me, I know I need never care,

But to love her is to need her everywhere...

Knowing that love is to share,

Each one believing that love never dies,

Watching her eyes, and hoping I'm always there...

I will be there and everywhere...

Here, there and everywhere."

John Lennon, "In My Life":

There are places I remember

All my life, though some have changed,

Some for ever, not for better.

And some have gone, and some remained.

All these places had there moments

With lovers and friends that I still can recall;

Some are dead and some are living ---

In my life, I loved them all.

But of all these friends and lovers

There is no one who compares with you,

And these memories lose their meaning,

When I think of love as something new.

Though I'll never, ever lose affection

For people and things that went before,

I'll often stop and think about them,

But in my life, I loved you more.

Though I'll never, ever lose affection

For people and things that went before,

I'll often stop and think about them,

But in my life, I loved you more."

By the way, a Greek singer named Nana Mouskouri did a version of "Here, There and Everywhere" that just ripped the heart out of me when I first heard it. And then, of course, there is Judy Collins's arresting version of "In My Life" {{{SIGH}}}

Simon and Garfunkle, BOOKENDS THEME...

"Time it was
And what a time it was...
It was.
A time of innocence,
A time of confidences...
Long ago,
It must be...
I have a photograph.
Preserve your memories,
They're all that's left you..."

CBS played that song as the background music to a photo montage of Robert Kennedy's life on the day that he was assassinated. I have never forgotten that bit of film... {{{SIGH}}}

Russians by Sting

In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russian love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly of common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put words in the mouth of the president
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie we don't believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us me and you
Is that the Russians love their children too.

Nilsson -

Everybody's talking at me.
I don't hear a word they're saying,
Only the echoes of my mind.
People stopping staring,
I can't see their faces,
Only the shadows of their eyes.

I'm going where the sun keeps shining
Thru' the pouring rain,
Going where the weather suits my clothes,
Backing off of the North East wind,
Sailing on summer breeze
And skipping over the ocean like a stone.

I'm going where the sun keeps shining
Thru' the pouring rain,
Going where the weather suits my clothes,
Backing off of the North East wind,
Sailing on summer breeze
And skipping over the ocean like a stone

(don't let me leave my love behind...)

Ah - must be the eternal wanderlust in me. . . When I hear it - I just gotta be moving on!

As I get older I'm realizing that there is no way things "should be," there's just the way they "are." I like to try to make things what they "can be," and once in awhile I succeed. This song is from my foreign exchange days as a 17 year old wet-behind-the-ears kid in Sweden in 1982. As in many phases of my life I was way out of my element, going where nobody else would want to go and getting my strange learning.
Now I'm a mother and housewife, and I still put on this song to get energy and stop apologizing.

A Town Called Malice, by The Jam
******
Better stop dreaming of the quiet life -
cos it's the one we'll never know
And quit running for that runaway bus -
cos those rosey days are few
And - stop apologising
for the things you've never done,
Cos time is short and life is cruel -
but it's up to us to change
This town called malice.
Rows and rows of disused milk floats
stand dying in the dairy yard
And a hundred lonely housewives
clutch empty milk
bottles to their hearts
Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry
It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come
fast and furious
In a town called malice.

Struggle after struggle - year after year
The atmosphere's a fine blend of ice -
I'm almost stone cold dead
In a town called malice.

A whole street's belief
in Sunday's roast beef
gets dashed against the Co-op
To either cut down on beer
or the kids new gear
It's a big decision in a town called malice.

The ghost of a steam train - echoes down my track
It's at the moment bound for nowhere -
just going round and round
Playground kids and creaking swings -
lost laughter in the breeze
I could go on for hours and I probably will -
but I'd sooner put some joy back
In this town called malice.

Joe, I, too, am really moved by the songs of Simon and Garfunkel. As we grow older, their songs ring true. I think of the Bookends poem with "old men who sit on their park bench like bookends." PBS had a special on their 1980 reunion concert in Central Park. I also remember a song by the Moody Blues, "Knights in White Satin" where one verse says, " just what you want to be, you'll be in the end." Another good singer-poet was the late Jim Croce.

After The Gold Rush, Neil Young (1970) There's a very nice acapella version of this song by the British group Prelude; it was a minor hit single in '73 or '74.

Well, I dreamed I saw the knights in armor coming
Sayin' something about a queen
There were peasants singin' and drummers drumming
And the archer split the tree
There was a fanfare blowin' to the sun
That floated on the breeze
Look at mother nature on the run in the nineteen seventies
Look at mother nature on the run in the nineteen seventies

I was lyin' in a burned out basement
With a full moon in my eyes
I was hopin' for a replacement
When the sun burst through the skies
There was a band playin' in my head
And I felt like getting high
Thinkin' about what a friend had said,
I was hopin' it was a lie
Thinkin' about what a friend had said,
I was hopin' it was a lie

Well, I dreamed I saw the silver spaceships flying
In the yellow haze of the sun
There were children crying and colors flying
All around the chosen ones
All in a dream, all in a dream
The loading had begun
Flyin' mother nature's silver seed
To a new home in the sun
Flyin' mother nature's silver seed
To a new home in the sun
