If I had a hammer,
I'd hammer in the morning,
I'd hammer in the evening,

"Days Between"
Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia

VOCAL; by jerry (standing in a baby blue stop lite) slow and mournfullll EH ... you had to be there...RED ROCKS AMPATHEATHER COLORADO............1988 or was it 78 ot 68 eh you had to be there???? hmmmmmm the only question is was I there???

There were days
and there were days
and there were days between
Summer flies and August dies
the world grows dark and mean
Comes the shimmer of the moon
on black infested trees
the singing man is at his song
the holy on their knees
the reckless are out wrecking
the timid plead their pleas
No one knows much more of this
than anyone can see anyone can see

There were days
and there were days
and there were days besides
when phantom ships with phantom sails
set to sea on phantom tides
Comes the lightning of the sun
on bright unfocused eyes
the blue of yet another day
a springtime wet with sighs
a hopeful candle lingers
in the land of lullabies
where headless horsemen vanish
with wild and lonely cries lonely cries

There were days
and there were days
and there were days I know
when all we ever wanted
was to learn and love and grow
Once we grew into our shoes
we told them where to go
walked halfway around the world
on promise of the glow
stood upon a mountain top
walked barefoot in the snow
gave the best we had to give
how much we'll never know we'll never know

There were days
and there were days
and there were days between
polished like a golden bowl
the finest ever seen
Hearts of Summer held in trust
still tender, young and green
left on shelves collecting dust
not knowing what they mean
valentines of flesh and blood
as soft as velveteen
hoping love would not forsake
the days that lie between lie between

This is a song for all those people out there who keep trying! By Nancy Griffith

I see you're headed out to California
They say the grapes are fallin' from the vine
I was hopin' you might have the urge to write me
But I don't believe you will, so never mind

I was talkin' to a man out at Todesco
He thought they might be hirin' any time
I'm so tired of going any way the wind blows
And I thought that maybe we... but never mind

chorus:
Never mind, never mind
I'm just talkin' through the wine
And you know that drinkin' always makes me sad
But before this night is through
I better say I love you
Or I'm gonna always wish that I had

I first saw you pickin' oranges in Orlando
All day you kept your ladder close to mine
We froze in Florida, burned up in Chicago
And I always thought that we... but never mind

Y'know, today my baby called you daddy
sometimes I wish that she was yours and mine
I could call my brother Milt in Cincinnati
And ask him for a loan, but... never mind

chorus

This song is so like me. It reminds me I better speak my mind and stop being afraid!

Winkin Blinkin and Nod one day sailed off in a wooden shoe ...
I can't remember all the lyrics since last singing it for my daughter. It's a great children's song/lullaby.

Amazing Grace
Lyla (all versions)
Willie the Whimp
Bette Midler's "The Rose"
We can sympathize with a child who is afraid of the dark, but the real tragedy of life is that most people are afraid of the light.

"Ripple"
Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia.

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

(Chorus)

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

(Chorus)

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home
Due to current economic conditions the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.

classics

I've Got a Name
Which Way Are You Goin'

this is the Roller Derby Queen

Tubthumping

Truth is, I thought it mattered. I thought that music mattered. But does it? Bullocks! Not compared to how people matter...
We'll be singing when we're winning
We'll be singing
I get knocked down but I get up again
You're never gonna keep me down
(Repeat)
Pissing the night away
Pissing the night away
He drinks a whiskey drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him of the better times
Oh, Danny Boy, Danny Boy, Danny Boy
I get knocked down but I get up again
You're never gonna keep me down
(Repeat)
Pissing the night away
Pissing the night away
He drinks a whiskey drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him of the better times
Don't cry for me, next door neighbor
I get knocked down but I get up again
You're never gonna keep me down

There's Something in the Air
By Thunderclap Newman

Call out the instigators
Because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right

We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together
now

Lock up the streets and houses
Because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right

We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together
now

Hand out the arms and ammo
We're going to blast our way through here
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right

We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together
Now
A mind should not be so open that the brains fall out; however, it should not be so closed that whatever gray matter which does reside may not be reached. ART BELL

The Sound of Silence
Paul Simon

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.

"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence.

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls."
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

What is Truth?
Johnny Cash, 1970

The old man turned off the radio
Said, "Where did all of the old songs go
Kids sure play funny music these days
They play it in the strangest ways"

Said, "It looks to me like they've all gone wild
It was peaceful back when I was a child"
Well, man, could it be that the girls and boys
Are trying to be heard above your noise?

And the lonely voice of youth cries
"What is truth?"

A little boy of three sittin' on the floor
Looks up and says, "Daddy, what is war?"
"Son, that's when people fight and die"
The little boy of three says "Daddy, why?"

A young man of seventeen in Sunday school
Being taught the golden rule
And by the time another year has gone around
It may be his turn to lay his life down

Can you blame the voice of youth for asking
"What is truth?"

A young man sittin' on the witness stand
The man with the book says "Raise your hand"
"Repeat after me, I solemnly swear"
The man looked down at his long hair

And although the young man solemnly swore
Nobody seems to hear anymore
And it didn't really matter if the truth was there
It was the cut of his clothes and the length of his hair

And the lonely voice of youth cries
"What is truth?"

The young girl dancing to the latest beat
Has found new ways to move her feet
The young man speaking in the city square
Is trying to tell somebody that he cares

Yeah, the ones that you're calling wild
Are going to be the leaders in a little while
This old world's wakin' to a new born day
And I solemnly swear that it'll be their way

You better help the voice of youth find
"What is truth/"

And the lonely voice of youth cries
"What is truth?"

Thanks for that flashback Riddick. Excellent song. My step-dad loved Johnny Cash since the 50's but didn't care much for this "hippied-up" song when it came out, heh. Johnny was ahead of his time...
