"Hotel California"

Post by Guest » 05-17-2002 10:20 PM

I can't believe all the stuff I am finding about the Hotel California.
According to my contact in LA, such a place really did exist! As you entered
the town of El Centro, California from "a dark, desert highway" it was one
of the first things that you saw. While closed to the public, it burned to
the ground in February of 1969 ("We haven't had that spirit here since
1969.") after some homeless people had accidentally set fire to it while
taking shelter from the elements. Trapped inside, ("We are all just
prisoners here of our own device.") all eight of them burned to death.
Emergency personnel tried in vain to put out the fire with the water from
the fire hoses ("They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't
kill the Beast.") So, if you are ever traveling down a certain "dark, desert
highway" and you see "a shimmering light" coming from where this hotel once
stood.....well, you know what to do.

Hotel California
by The Eagles

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself this could be heaven or this could be hell
Then she lit up a candle, and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place, such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (any time of year) you can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the captain; please bring me my wine
We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty-nine
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night, just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place, such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise) bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling, the pink champagne on ice
And she said we are all just prisoners here of our own device
And in the master's chambers, they gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Relax said the nightman We are programmed to receive
You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave.

Wow.
I have been to El Centro (not a good experience) and can vouch for the dark, desert highway. I've always wondered exactly why that town was even out there.
I recall the town being surrounded by about the same amount of nothing that is all around Las Vegas. The night I was there, the ice skating rink burned down. I think they have a real problem with fire out there.

More? It's ugly... I was crossing the desert in a volkwagen bus, and it couldn't take the heat. I cooked the engine and El Centro was the closest place that wasn't just sand and rocks.

I got towed in there, and it took four days to get all the parts and tools to get that previously reliable flat four going again.

On the way into town the tow truck had a scanner going, and it reported some fun loving kids racing around town firing shotguns out the windows of their pickups. Sort of playing tag.

I asked if that was normal, and the girlfriend of the driver said it was. She said they used to go to the ice skating rink, but it burned down the night before. If I remember right something else.. a strip mall or a theater or something... had burned down a few weeks prior.

I can testify that there was nothing to do in that town but drink and stay close to someplace air conditioned. During the time I was waiting on parts, I found the hotel bar covered both problems nicely.

This was in like 1975 or so, and they didn't have cable TV. Couldn't get any radio but one C&W station that got old in seconds. I'm talking zero point nothing.

Now, there were some fascinating people in that bar... mostly stuck like me. Couple of salesmen, I think, and three or four truck drivers. I think that was about the second worst place in the whole world to break down... and I don't even want to think about what might be the worst. I figure the odds are there IS a place worse than that, but I haven't been there.

The guy who wrote Hotel California must have been stuck there, too.. yes? I bet there's a story behind the writing of the song as well as the hotel itself.

Also: If anybody knows what prompted someone to found El Centro out there in El Centro of the Deserto, I'm still curious.

I don't think there is anything out there ... not even the truth.

One would have to go back into native american history to find out why MANY towns like that were started. Think about it - out in the middle of the desert - lonely place - hmm does the term "WATER" come to mind? Quite often those places became towns because of that simple factor. (reading western history)

The song done by The Eagles is excellent.
