These are very ambitious levels Janus, if we get serious I think the World can accomplish it..80% is good.

It sounds good SP - but you and I know that words mean nothing without action, and secondly it's 2050 - can you imagine 2050 - it's a joke - what is required is the rapid release of currently classified technologies into the public on a global scale... It is way past time to wake the control of humanity through the control of energy..... It's the 21C not the 19th or 20thC..... Happy Birthday Mr Tesla - we miss you and your mind.....:) :)

Antarctic glacier 'thinning fast'
"This is unprecedented in this area of Antarctica. We've known that it's been out of balance for some time, but nothing in the natural world is lost at an accelerating exponential rate like this glacier"

Decline in Arctic sea ice thickness from submarine and ICESat records: 1958–2008
"Within the data release area (DRA) of declassified submarine sonar measurements (covering ?38% of the Arctic Ocean), the overall mean winter thickness of 3.64 m in 1980 can be compared to a 1.89 m mean during the last winter of the ICESat record—an astonishing decrease of 1.75 m in thickness"

This is starting to scare me, things are accelerating much faster then they have been telling us.

One of the largest glaciers in Antarctica is thinning four times faster than it was 10 years ago, according to research seen by the BBC.

A study of satellite measurements of Pine Island glacier in west Antarctica reveals the surface of the ice is now dropping at a rate of up to 16m a year.

Since 1994, the glacier has lowered by as much as 90m, which has serious implications for sea-level rise.

Study: Climate change means more heavy rain

By Doyle Rice, USA TODAY
Climate change will lead to an increase in heavy rainfall events across most of the world, according to a study published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Caltech.
The computer models used in the study predict that areas such as North America can expect a significant increase in heavy rain.

How much rain? The study suggests that precipitation in extreme events will increase by about 6% for every 1.8 degree rise in global temperature. A global temperature increase of anywhere from 2 to 11 degrees is expected by 2100, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

6.4-magnitude earthquake hits Venezuelan coast
Posted: 13 September 2009 0450 hrs
WASHINGTON - An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Moment Magnitude scale struck the coast of Venezuela on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake occurred 96 kilometres (59 miles) from the capital Caracas.

"We have not received any (information) of material damage, much less any reports of the loss of human life," said interior minister Tarek El Aissami.

Climate change: no Eden, no apocalypse

CLIMATE change is everywhere. Not only is the physical climate changing, but the idea of climate change is now active across the full range of human endeavours. Climate change has moved from being a predominantly physical phenomenon to being a social one, in the process reshaping the way we think about ourselves, our societies and humanity's place on Earth.

Floods in Philippines worst in 42 years

The Observer, Sunday 27 September 2009
Nearly a month's worth of rain fell in six hours yesterday as Tropical Storm Ketsana slammed ashore in the Philippines, killing five people and leaving thousands stranded on rooftops in the capital's worst flooding in more than 42 years.

The government declared a "state of calamity" in Manila and about two dozen provinces. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo had to take an elevated commuter train to the disaster council office to preside over a meeting because roads were clogged by vehicles stuck in the floodwaters.

Two people were reported killed in suburban Muntinlupa and three others in Quezon city. ABS-CBN television showed more than a dozen people perched on the roofs of houses being swept away by the Marikina river.

Anthropogenic forcing dominates sea level rise since 1850
"Only 4 ± 1.5 cm (25% of total sea level rise) during the 20th century is attributed to natural forcings, the remaining 14 ± 1.5 cm are due to a rapid increase in CO2 and other greenhouse gases"
