This is really interesting, but it sets me thinking about folks who maintain that Mary called the Magdalene was not given that title because she hailed from Migdal or Migdala, but rather because of her status as "the tower" (?) or "Magdal-eder."

I don't know enough to have an educated opinion, but I know people like Margaret Starbird have put forth elaborate reasoning as to why "Magdalene" did not come from a place name.

This is amazing Joe, great find, thank goodness it was discovered and will be preserved. Shill up and down my spine is exactly how I feel Joe. I don't want to imagine what has been built over unaware. I see there is also a link to the wall that was discovered recently.

The traditional explanation, Swerdloc, at least before we all entered the New Age, is that Mary came from Magdala (or Migdala). She was a rich Jewish woman, whom Pope Gregory I (c. 600 CE) conflated with the lunatic prostitute who was possessed by seven devils. And we all know what Dan Brown made of her in The Da Vinci Code.

I bet Jesus visited this synagogue. It was, after all, a major synagogue (30 by 40 meters in area). I wish that a psychic archaeologist could visit some of these sites. :D
