Congrats, Megman!

Thought you just hit 2200 a little while ago. That's fast! Two weeks ago actually.

And welcome to Bill!

Whoa.
I just looked at the team stats... there are some really honkin' machines on this team! I might have to do some tuning. 7 hours per WU? You must be burning nitro in that thing.
I might have to sneak SetiDriver on to my machine at work. I think some of you have got some of that secret Alien technology from Roswell (although all *I* have seen in Roswell is some amazing T-shirt technology). I must go and buy a faster computer... that's all there is to it. Maybe two... or three. It's a necessity.
The only catch is they always want you to pay for them. It's always something.

I am leaving the team...of 26 names on the team, 12 are not crunching. I may stop crunching altogether...I'm not sure yet. All I know is, I am giving up message boards completely for a while...I have discovered I am out of step with the times..going to read more books, take more walks, and interact with people up close and personally...not in cyberspace. It's been fun.

Gwen - you will be missed. You are already missed. The reason I have not been crunching for several weeks is that I blew out my motherboard/cpu - and can not afford to replace it again in the near future.

I do understand your desire to interact more with the actual world and people out there. It is good to be able to do both - and I admire those who have found a nice balance. Image

Hope you will miss us too - and stop in from time to time.

All the best - in the meantime.

Gwen, I just want to echo what Linnea said, and don't be a stranger.

As for the FFST, we are pretty close to a 50% non-participation rate. This really looks good when trying to get recruitments. Maybe it's time to clean house??

I know you have 'puter problems Linnea and maybe 1 or 2 others. Some just have no intention left of crunching anymore for the team or for Seti. 'Dead wood' I guess would be the best term. I would recommend contacting those individuals to see what the story is and giving them the option to remove themselves or be removed by the team administrator. Just my humble onion...

I keep changing my mind about the liklihood of actually finding anything on SETI. Most of the time, I end up thinking it sure couldn't hurt to keep looking. But that's not the main thing that keeps me at it.

Even a "support group" like this, while fun and helpful, is not enough by itself to bother with it all, even though it's almost zero bother.

What really keeps me going is that this is going to be used for years as an example of the effective use of distributed computing on the internet. This is making history regardless of the success or failure of the whole SETI effort. I know it is used NOW as an example in many CS schools... I like being a part of something like that. Also, I'd really like it to find something.

Also, it is so close to effortless my extremely well developed sense of laziness is stroked and affirmed.

Drifting away from an online community I understand completely... and drifting back from time to time. But taking part in this grand experiment is too easy and too cool to quit. I quit for a long time beause a move and one of Art's retirements happened at the same time... and I started back up out of sheer enthusiasm when Art came back. Now, it's just too easy to continue, and the trend this effort has started is too big and too interesting. I'll keep it up until I just can't do it any more... like if they make electricity illegal or something.

Megman - The reports on last time units were sent in - does not reflect that FFST member's are not crunching. It takes some pc-s longer to get through the 25 work units and do a 'send' to Seti. The last date units sent - does not show us that crunchers are inactive - unless the date is really stale.

We have a few who seem to be no longer crunching - and 2 who have never crunched. We have 2 Sufis - I wondered myself if the non-crunching Sufi could be deleted without effecting the other real Sufi.

Rapa is having serious health issues - as we know - also impacts Sufi. Toni never seemed to be able to get set up. Perhaps the FFST admn or moderator here - could contact him?

FairBecca has been away - and may well start up again. I and RC do not wish to be deleted from the team - altho' we need to get some back up pc-s. Simply can not afford to have another PC blow out. Funds are scarce right now.

Anyhow - maybe some of our crunchers who are reading this will contact the mods if they are having problems. TAB probably has a lot of dead wood - as do many teams. Maybe it shows more in a smaller team.

Let's send emails of encouragement and inquiry to those who have not sent units in a while - and see if help can be offered.

It is too bad that FFST takes the 'political' hits when there is a problem on the forum. But that's life. We lost a couple great crunchers. I think that stinks! But - I can't do anything about it - except try to get over it - eh?.

I don't think the non-cruncher or slow cruncher status should effect recruiting. Every team has some.

Let's got out and try to recruit some new
Pirate crunchers!

(edit to add: Think I will get back online for awhile - unless and until I start seeing smoke, clunking noises and flames)

Linnea, if you look at the dates and compare them to some of the average crunch times, it's clear that nothing is happening. Maybe the administrator of the team, who has access to everyone's e-mails could drop a note to see if there is a problem that can be dealt with or if they just decided to stop, which ever is the case. Maybe there are problems and they are just frustrated with it.

ed to add: Am more than willing to help out with any tech issues people may have, but I don't have everyone's e-mail. Image

.....just so happens that the 'administrator of the team' is none other that our very own (copied from the Seti site) Revisedcode.

Oh, oh, my Scorpio Sting struck again.
