~FYI~

Post by Gwen » 02-11-2002 05:54 PM

This topic is for general information and news regarding Seti@home.

There is a new section on the Seti@home site. There are message boards for registered Seti@home users to post on...the threads are Seti Science, Help Desk, Crunchers Corner, and What Next.

http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/bb/bb.cgi

There is a lot of interesting info there.

I received a nice e-mail from our Australian member, Butch. He received a promotion at work and had to move his family from one side of Australia to the other, but is getting settled in, and hopes to be back crunching soon. Image

Congratulations on your promotion, Butch. We hope to see you back at the Fantastic Forum Seti at Home team soon. Best wishes to you and your family in your new home Image

Hey, Butch - hope you get settled and join us in crunching again - and maybe stop in and say hello!

There is an update from 2-25-02 on the bandwidth problem.

You may have noticed something new on our stats page. Some of you have a little yellow (gold?) medal after your name. Seti@home is starting a new recognition program with milestone medals. I don't know if it will entail anything more than the little thing by your name. Details are sketchy. They are for completing 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2500, 5000, and 10,000 WU's, just like the certificates that are available. You can get to those from your individual stats, down at the bottom. They are not very impressive looking. There is also a very nice certificate of appreciation available from the Planetary Society for any cruncher, no matter how many units are completed. Here's the link for the Certificate of Appreciation Just follow the instructions to print your name on it; you can put your real name on it, not your username, if you choose. It is a nice document, suitable for framing, not
like the milestone certificates.

Keep on crunchin' mates Image

Well, the medals are gone from the stats page today and the note about the medals is gone from the main seti page...go figure Image

Typical seti@ home lately - eh? Maybe the need volunteer program managers and workers, rather than crunchers Image

This notice is up on the Seti@home page:

OUTAGE NOTICE: There will be a network outage on Monday, 3/4/02, from 14:45 to 16:00 UT for local router maintenance. Our data server and web site will be unavailable during this time.
--------------------------------------------

When I click on the time in the bottom right on my screen, then on time zone, it tells me Arizona time is GMT (UT)-7 hours. I wouldn't count on the outage only being an hour and 15 minutes!

Well, you have the time estimate right. I used to have printed on my business cards the following warning" "Everything costs more and takes longer." IT time estimates are the opposite of Scotty's on Star Trek.

I hope they get it fixed pretty soon, though. WU's process slow enough when you can get through!

This notice was on the main Seti@home page:

— March 14, 2002 —

Finally, after not being able to connect all weekend, this notice was up:

— March 18, 2002 —
A firewall failure at SSL on Saturday caused us to lose connectivity until the problem was fixed this morning.
------------------------------------------

I am out of WU's, but it will probably be futile to attempt to download any today, after ther server being down so long...they will be logjammed! This is getting to be a pain in the $$%^&(&*!!

Well, as of six PM MST, ain't no WU's goin' nowhere. I have four cached... and I've had them cached all weekend. Aliens could be mounting a major invasion and we wouldn't know!

I hope this bandwidth thing isn't permanent. Since they are saving zillions of dollars using our cpu's instead of paying for a supercomputer or two, maybe they could squeak out a little more grant money for bandwidth... ya think?
