Registration

Post by Fan » 05-13-2011 04:09 PM

I am trying to open up registration at the moment. I am coding a bot-killer into it since vb2 has basically no protection against spammers. Ah the good old days, when spam was still something you got in your email.

Anyways, don't hold your breath, but if I can figure something out, I will open it back up.

You can enable registration FAN just dont allow the member to use the account UNTIL YOU VERIFY THEM (Thats how linnea did it)

This is the BEST WAY to keep spam off here and she did a good job..

Just assign someone on Staff to verify new members .. Check the email address they used, check thier handle, etc and if they are OK,enable thier account for posting on all the bases...

Sometimes a handle with #'s in it is a spammer and i think thats why i was refused for so long..... (I registered but wasnt approved and i understand why) I am glad i got her to trust that i was OK :)

BTW: The /ubb directory seems to be gone!! (I dont see any smilies)

hmm yeah there are way too many registrations to verify, and some of them are impossible to tell just from email/username.

I'll figure it out, I have a very good method that works for 95% of them right away.

I fixed the smilies again grr sorry about that.

Here's a question I've been wondering about, and probably has something to do with people's hesitations about the new status of the forum (if they've thought it out that far) -- what about the people who've been banned? Quite a group, now that I think of it.

I think Linnea let most people always come back if they wanted to. She was pretty darn forgiving. And those that she didn't well, I'll say no more. ;)

I am not against it. They should email me at [email protected] and tell me their username and approximate banning date. I'll check it out and am open to giving second chances. I would like to be able to confer with a team about this, but I am not sure I will have that luxury, so... let's just see :)

I'm not sure about that. There was one guy who kept contacting me trying to get me to get Linnea to let him back in. As far as other posters who were banned, I don't know if they asked or not -- maybe they were so upset they didn't. I'm not sure how that all shook out. I do know that IW in part positioned itself as the place for banned FF posters. Since Fan is associated with that website, I was just kind of wondering what was up, if anything. Like I said, I wouldn't mind if banned posters were allowed to come back (if they wanted to).

You make a good point HB3. Who the hell am I to judge anyhow? :)

Yesterday, I spent a couple of hours reading old posts from 2003 to now and there were many posters I had forgotten about. Read some good posts from some good folks that I have not seen for years. Reading them gave me some really good laughs too.

Is there a reason why?

Due to current economic conditions the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.
