Severe Storms and Tornado's in Metro Detroit Area

Post by Shirleypal » 08-24-2007 07:20 PM

We had some very bad storms come through the Detroit Area and outter Counties about an hour ago........reports and videos just coming in, a lot of damage and power lines down in the City of Oak Park just South of me.

Just got off the phone with my daughter who lives in Fenton, Michigan near Flint about 40 miles from here, they had very severe weather there, no power, they walked downtown just a few blocks away and Adrienne said 100's of trees are down, power lines and there is a danger of flooding, they were going to take off and go stay with friends near me but all the roads are blocked and they cannot leave the area, so they will stay home, they do have a basement, cell phones and a wireless laptop so they will be okay. Fenton area where she is lives is a pretty small town........

Oh my God, the reports and videos are starting to come in on my local news..........very bad in many areas of Metro Detroit and outlining counties like where my daughter is. Showing where a Tornado struck about 10 miles from where my daughter is in Howell, Michigan......about a half mile of destruction

Hoping all will be well with you and yours. And, if you have any iPods laying about, it wouldn't hurt to make a sacrificial offering of them to appease mother nature. ;)

We actually had no rain here today, and I was able to mow down my yard (was slow going though, grass was a foot tall). I would have preferred to let it be, but the neighbors get so testy when I try to let nature have her way, ha. One day though ~ one day she will!

Stay in touch, and enjoy the show, natures wrath can be a beautiful thing when she doesn't have a bone to pick with you. I love thunder storms.

Thanks, I think the worst is over, now it is clean up and repair time, over 70,000 in the area without power and there is some major messes to clean up.

I love thunder storms.

I love them too but not when they hurt people and damage property.

Glad you're ok, Shirl.

I love a good storm, too, but damn if they're not as scary as hell these days....

There was also a Tornado in Fenton where my daughter lives, my daughters street is ok, but as you know Tornados are hit and miss, but the power is out and may be for days. There are taking calls from Fenton residents now and they are telling Channel 7 WXYZ about the devastation.........it is mush worse than my daughter thought......they still cannot leave the area so they will stay home.......hope Adrienne can get to work tomorrow.

Watching the news this evening I am finding out that Fenton has been devastated with this Tornado, the population is about 10,000 and the South part of this town has sustained the most damage including the downtown area........many homes flattened and thousands of trees down. There is a huge tree uprooted across the street from my daughter but no damage to her home.
Of course no Power and many power lines down, they are under curfew and no one is allowed into the area.

Mayor of Fenton just on live and said the beautiful city of Fenton has been destoryed.

Sorry you are having really rough weather Shirley. Tornadoes give no advance warning, its horrible there is so much damage, but thank God, no one was hurt. My prayers to go out to the people of Fenton.

I've been hearing about Fenton on the radio today on national news. When it makes national news, you know it had to have been bad. Of course, storms are nothing new, but it's the frequency and intensity of them that becomes alarming. It's as if the tropical zone is widening and pushing north. And, these are just the summer changes. Imagine what could happen if 10 inches of rainfall arrives as snow come winter. Imagine if it snowed for two weeks without relent. Imagine becoming buried under a hundred feet of snow. This has happened in these areas upon earth before, and it wasn't a progressive winter to winter buildup ~ this can suddenly happen one particular winter, with summer melt off not happening for hundreds or thousands of years later.

I think the signs and warning that this is about to happen again are all around us. Like the instincts of a wild animal, I feel this coming. I feel the need and desire to begin migrating, but to where? There are so many fences and borders in our way, and so much bad karma surrounding us. I find all this troubling.

Honestly, I know the instinct is to rebuild a community after a disaster such as this, but is putting so much resource into this going to be a wise decision, all things considered. I honestly believe the Maya and other earlier civilization were trying to warn us about something we're only a few years away from (despite those who dis my feelings of impending doom).

Maybe it's time to rethink what we are doing and where and how.
