If it's true this happened at geographically disparate processing plants, then obviously we're talking about highly organized activity....

Now 1,000 and climbing:

Earlier this evening Pet Connection announced a milestone that none of us ever wanted to hear. Their database, created as a result of the Menu Foods recall, has grown to include the names and information on 1,000 pets - 1,000 pets that have died. And, with 60 million recalled packages of wet cat & dog food, experts say there may likely be thousands more pet victims before it’s all said and done.

I am hoping the people who have reported three deaths from dry Iams is not correct. I feed Tiffany Science Diet dry but ran out a few nights ago and had to buy at the grocery store Iams which she did not eat very much of....she doesn't look ill hoping for the best.

Several Unconfirmed Reports of Iams Dry Food Causing Illness
March 23rd, 2007

Update 3:30pm: We will be collecting emails over the next few days and release a result early next week. In the meantime, if you believe your pet was sicked by ANY kind of pet food, please contact the manufacturer and/or the FDA.

Original Post: We want to repeat that Iams dry pet food is NOT a part of the recall (it only applies to wet food) but itchmo has been hearing of several independent reports that Iams dry pet food has caused illnesses in at least three independent cases. All three reports of pets getting sick has singled out Iams dry food as the cause.

We’re not sure if this is anything more than just coincidence. But, we haven’t seen other dry food being singled out for illness and we’re curious. If you believe your dog has been sickened by dry food, or know of any reports that say so, please email us at [email protected] and we’ll see if we can log more possible cases.

What about this? This suggests it wasn't deliberate.

Tainted Chinese wheat behind US pet poisonings: report

Investigators have reportedly found a rodent-killing chemical sprayed on imported Chinese wheat in the tainted pet food that has killed several animals in the US and Canada.

"A source close to the investigation tells ABC News that the rodenticide, which the source says is illegal to use in the United States, was on wheat that was imported from China and used by Menu Foods in nearly 100 brands of dog and cat food," the US network said in its website.

Several people have filed suit in US courts following the deaths of their pets, including that of a cat called Phoenix in Chicago and another called Samoya in the northwestern state of Oregon, court sources said.

A couple in the US state of Arkansas have sued for compensation for costs incurred by the illness and death of their dog Abby.

In the northern state of Wisconsin a woman also filed a complaint concerning her cat Gumbi, who will require life-long treatment following kidney failure caused by pet food.

Last week Menu Foods issued a massive recall of 60 million cans and pouches of food.

ABC said the chemical at issue is aminopterin. So far however investigators have not said if this is the only contaminant in all of the recalled food, ABC reported.

"There is some good news according to the source. Knowing the chemical should aid veterinarians who are treating animals that have been sickened by the pet food," it added.

Pet owners in Canada also sued the Canadian branch of the company over the alleged taintings.

“A pet is an important part of any family,” Paul Henderson, the president and CEO of Menu Foods, said at a Toronto press conference. “We understand what pet ownership is.”

Remarkably, he also said “the company has not stopped manufacturing at the two plants believed to have produced the contaminated pet food” as we reported earlier in the week (emphasis ours).

So does he really understand the magnitude of the pet parents’ anger?

ABC News is also questioning the safety of other pet foods:

Investigators, meanwhile, are looking into whether the rat poison came into the United States on an ingredient used in the recalled food. ABC News has learned that Menu Foods bought wheat gluten, the only ingredient changed in its plants, from China. That possibility raises questions about the safety of pet and other food products in the United States."

it also includes Ol' Roy (sold by Wal-Mart, which unfortunately, our jack russell terriorist seems to thrive on. Oh well, back to Purina.

I'm sorry for those who have lost dog and cat family members. I watched the news conference today and like most of that ilk, said a lot about not much beyond preparing themselves to appear proactive for the litigation that follows (two class-action suits have been filed in Canada so far).

Hi Tiffany, yes and thank you. Ollie gets Benefil (not sure that's spelled correctly) by Purina, a good dry food, with a tablespoon or so wet of the Ol' Roy as treats.

I checked the news sites under "rat poison in dog food") and followed the links to a frightenly inclusive list of brands of dog food manufactured under or for various labels by Menu Foods. They give lot numbers, expiration dates and UPC code numbers by label, size, and name of the food (like Ol' Roy London Grill).

I had two unopened cans that were on this list. This goes back to Wally's World on the morrow.
