Bush, Rice, Gates Make Surprise Visit to Iraq
Three Will Conduct Meetings With U.S. Military Leaders and Iraqi Political Leadership
In a surprise trip shrouded in secrecy, President Bush and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates flew roughly 11 hours to a remote air base in western Iraq for a meeting with senior U.S. military leaders and top Iraqi political leadership.
National security adviser Stephen Hadley told reporters the Al Asad Air Base in the Anbar province was chosen because of its remarkable turnaround in security. A year ago violence was high and a military intelligence officer said it was lost to al Qaeda.
Bush and Gates join Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who is also in Iraq.
A Decisional Meeting
Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell described this extraordinary meeting as a decisional meeting.
"This is the last opportunity the president will have to meet with his war council and the Iraqi leadership before making his decision on the way forward in Iraq," Morrell said. "This is clearly a meeting geared toward making a decision."

The timing of this is a joke !! With the report due to be released, they are there to tie off any loose ends, before he tells the American people there will be no change.

OOPs I posted at the same time, as you posted this.whskyfan wrote: Maybe some planning for Iran also???
And just a coincidence that they chose Anbar province... To show how well the surge is working.
There is more here. Condi has been in hiding haven't seen much of her recently. Something is up, as Chertoff would say "I feel it in my gut"
Bush Says Pace of Progress May Mean Fewer U.S. Forces
Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush said the progress being made in stabilizing Iraq's Anbar province may lead to a reduction of U.S. forces.
Bush, who made a surprise visit to Iraq today, said after meeting with Iraqi political leaders and U.S. military commanders that Iraqis living in the region west of Baghdad are taking more responsibility for their own security.
``If the kind of success we are seeing continues, it will be possible to maintain the same level of security with fewer American forces,'' Bush said at the al-Asad Air Base.

What a surprise, this was done just to settle the Congress down. Nothing is going to change.

I just posted on another thread that I had to turn away from all the BS of the live coverage...the Marine commanders were drooling all over themselves.
I'm telling you...about two week before something "big" happens overseas, or even here in the States, those huge C-17s or whatever they are fly over my house on a path southwest to northeast...It happened routinely after Sept. 11...you could count the days, and then BAM. One flew over about a two weeks ago.
To be fair (if I could without having tomatoes thrown at me) the media/public don't have a clue as to what's REALLY going on in the underbelly of the world...we can speculate all we want, but I doubt we're anywhere close to the truth. If we really knew, we wouldn't want to leave our homes. That's what always ages a president, turns his hair gray by the time his term(s) is over. The burden off it all, and how he handles it, is something we can't comprehend. I pray the next president will have the best advisors/team money and loyalty can buy....
