China-Mart Takes Over

The writing is on the wall...

China-Mart Takes Over

Paul Craig Roberts
Wednesday, July 27, 2005

My poor beloved country, trapped in a Middle Eastern quagmire and tricked by Osama bin Laden into subsidizing to the tune of $300 billion (spent or appropriated) a training ground for Muslim terrorists and insurgents, while our once fabulous economy disintegrates.

If the United States were still rich and just wanted to throw several hundred billion dollars at bin Laden as a goodwill gesture, that would be one thing. But we are borrowing the money that we are using to train Muslim terrorists to kill and maim our troops in Iraq and Londoners in England.

The money is being lent to us mainly by Asians, especially the Chinese. China has so many dollars to lend to us because we send so many dollars to China to pay for the goods and services that patriotic American corporations have decided to supply to us from China, instead of from America.

U.S. corporations decided that the way to get rich was to destroy their American consumer base by closing their American factories, throwing their U.S. employees out of work and hiring Chinese, instead. The Chinese work for less, you see, and free trade economists say lowering costs makes us better off.

What U.S. corporations and the free trade economists overlook is that giving Americans' jobs to foreigners raises foreign incomes and lowers American incomes. When credit cards and home equity lines are maxed out, there will be nothing to support the U.S. consumer market. The American corporations who moved their capital and technology to China will have to find new customers.

Maybe the Chinese government will let the relocated U.S. firms sell to Chinese customers, or maybe the Chinese government will let the U.S. firms go bankrupt. The latter favors China's strategic interest. Chinese businessmen will purchase the bankrupt firms, and Chinese businesses will sell to Chinese customers.

Americans are pouring so much money into China that China can finance our wars while it buys up our companies. Everyone was shocked that a Chinese company could outbid Chevron for Unocal. China has already purchased IBM's personal computer business, and it is now after U.S. appliance-maker Maytag (whose products are made in Mexico).

The outsourcing mania has hit the Pentagon, and China will soon be supplying the ships for the U.S. Navy. The Pentagon, seeking lowest cost, is pushing defense contractors to outsource offshore for more materials, components and systems.

This means the end of U.S. shipbuilding capability. Component suppliers to American shipbuilding are already skeletal thin, with most components only having sole suppliers. For example, the July 8 Manufacturing and Technology News reports that 80 percent of the components for the Virginia Class submarine come from sole sources.

With not enough U.S. Navy ships being built to support even an industry of sole suppliers, Asia is fast becoming the only source for U.S. Navy ships. While President Bush spends $300 billion recruiting and training terrorists for bin Laden in Iraq, U.S. Navy ship procurement has fallen 33 percent since 2001.

Meanwhile, China is on a rip. China is now the third largest shipbuilder after South Korea and Japan. In five years, China's submarine fleet will be twice the size of America's. In 10 years, China's navy will be larger than the American fleet.

This is amazing performance for a country that as recently as 1989 had essentially no shipbuilding industry.

This year, the United States is producing six ships, one-tenth of South Korea's output. In 2006, the United States is scheduled to produce only four ships, because China has outbid us for the steel. The U.S. "superpower" can no longer afford to compete against China for essential materials.

Cynthia Brown, president of the American Shipbuilding Association, says that "the manufacture of entire components and systems will migrate to China in the next several years under current Department of Defense policy with respect to outsourcing."

But hey, we will get ships cheaper, and it is making us rich!

Hells Bells, Iris! And to think, in the time it took you to post this, gobs of deluded people hauled out their plastic, or plunked down their grand babies pennies to buy Chinese trinkets at Walmart. The sad part is that they believe they are patriotic Americans. People used to laugh at stories of Native Americans selling land for trinkets. Who will be laughing at us? You can bet the laughter will have a Mandarin accent.

btw: Chinese plan to eliminate all dialects except Mandarin by 2030.

Bingo, Mudwoman! But hey, saving a few bucks at Walmart is all that matters, haven't you heard? And to hell with my beloved country. :(

That's good to know. Then I guess that's the one we should be learning?

It is a novel or a movie script, based on reality, waiting to be written or if it is will be preempted and cast aside to die on the vine of ideas along with many others falling prey to the "blindness' promoted and the facts buried underneath volumes of misperceptions and disinformational tacts.

Questions still?

Hypothetical:

If a media production depicting two individuals from a southern state, let's say Arkansas, with political ambitions and personnel agendas set forth in to motion a strategy of co operation with a known "enemy" of the state both on ideological and economical fronts under the guise and distress of political division and turmoil under the shadows of misleading conflicts and supported by a world body seeking to gain authoratarian power as its stated ambitious goal...

Would you read and or watch it and see it for what it is?

The script has been written, you just must look beyond to see it for what it is.

The Chinese only pay their help in scraps because everything else they need is taken care of by the State. Health care, education, food, clothing, ect.

Their pay is basically just play money.

How can an economy that only allows the rich access to health care and education compete with China?

It won't and can't.

But the scary thing is wait till China invades Taiwan. BushCo will jump at the chance to expend more souls from the ghetto to look tough. Call it political clout.

We shall see. It's going to get a helluva lot worse in the years to come.

Have you built a fall-out shelter in your backyard yet?

Twenty years ago, I used to say to people..buy only from your neighborhood local store....buy only made in America,

Now, I wonder who can afford to do so? Like spaceprofit says....we cannot compete...nor can we hardly afford even wallmart on our wages....solution? I dont have one..........bummer, bummer, bummer,

I still say a solution to some of the problems is park all the cars....but ....if you take a poll...people will tell you its too inconvenient, and impossible with their lifestyles......well.....soon they wont be able to afford their cars, or the gas to put in them .....to maintain their lifestyles........and then what??

I think we're in deep doodoo when we can't even manufacture our own battleships, then the prez is going "na-na, nah na-na" at the only nation that can help us in that department. Just a hunch.

Iris -- where am I -- well I was off wondering what they are going to put in the WalMarts being build IN China....

- - -
Now about the components coming from China -- maybe people should start taking a closer look at the components in their own cars and find out where THEY have originated. BUT there appears to be a lot of "assuming" going on here...future wise. AND we all know that plans are often changed.

So get on the bandwagon and start yelling at the Dept of Defense to get components elsewhere...
