Solar Storm Warning
Boulder, Colo. — A strong geomagnetic storm was expected to hit Earth on Friday with the potential to affect electrical grids and satellite communications.
One of the largest sunspot clusters in years developed over the past three days and produced a coronal mass ejection, similar to a solar flare, at 3 a.m. EDT Wednesday, forecasters at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
The disturbance was expected to produce a geomagnetic storm rated G-3. A G-5 storm is the strongest.
The storm could make the aurora visible as far south as Oregon and Illinois.
A coronal mass ejection is an explosion of gas and charged particles into space from the corona, the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere.
A second sunspot cluster not yet visible from Earth could produce more geomagnetic storms in the next two weeks, NOAA said.

If you were thinking of doing any wing-wakking on a U-2 I'd start at around SPF 40, 000 . I'd tidy up the will and insurance details first .

deeremom, great link !
Amazing article, I had some interruption on my Direct TV the other day & it wasnt raining I think it was the first flare BUT this one is to be much larger. I wonder if theyre could be major effects, time will tell.
This might sound corny or weird but nature is so amazing & we're lucky to be alive! We're lucky that something more ominous doesnt happen with the sun blowing up or a huge asteroid hitting us, theyre has to be a God LOL, !:)

Listening to the radio tonight (Tuesday) and the local news actually ran a small bit about the incoming flare occuring in the coming hours. They even issued a warning saying some electrical componets may not be working when we wake up Wednesday.
Last time we had a big flare a number of years ago, Western Canada lost it's cable tv for three days.
Perhaps on a related note, we had a wicked snowstorm roll in early tonight which it is said will last three days or so.
We'll see what happens.

The first parts of this CME are expected to reach earth around noon EST. From all the reports I've read no one can say with Certainty what will happen or how bad it may be, it will depend they say on the alignment of earths magnetic field to the incoming particles.
Personally I'm going to take mudwomans advise and play it safe by unplugging before heading out to work.
Have a great day.
