Shuttle Landing - Tuesday

Post by Fred_Vobbe » 08-08-2005 08:05 PM

I thought I would share this communication for those of you wanting to watch or monitor the shuttle. Ham ops: one of the IRLP reflectors will be retransmitting NASA audio.

-- Start Forward --

Depending on the weather and other conditions, NASA may attempt to land the shuttle Discovery tomorrow morning during one of four different orbits and at one of three locations: Kennedy Space Center in Florida; White Sands, NM; and Edwards Air Force Base in California.

NBC Network Operations has put out the following Urgent Message detailing coverage plans for the various landing opportunities:

The Shuttle landed at 8:11 am PDT at Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert of California.

There has been speculation that there was more to this trip than met our eyes. I think there was.

They interviewed two men (don't know there names, pretty early for me), and I sat up in bed at what I heard.

One man was like the PR guy for NASA, saying all kinds of nice things.

Then they split screened and introduced another who was the lead engineer for the space shuttle.

He in no uncertain terms (and angry I might add) stated that this was a test flight and they should not have had four extra astronauts on board. It was a big no, no. He also stated there was no back up for the crew, no oxygen backup or way of escape for them while transferring from the space station to the shuttle.
He was very angry and said when this gets to Congress he feels they will shut it down because of the risks that have been taken.

The news guy asked Mr. PR what he thought and he said well yes it is best to shut down this fleet for the new and improved craft in the making. The engineer said the new craft is NOT safe.

The PR guy then said the reason for all those astronauts on board was because they had to have all those people to transfer things from the space station to the shuttle. (What required them to risk the crew to transfer 'what stuff' to the shuttle. What is really being done and what are they transferring!)

The Engineer was fuming as he stated this was not a trip for transferring. This was a trip for test purposes of the shuttle only.

The engineer rebuffed the PR guy, with a stern voice and said the new vehicle is NOT safe.

That was the end of a uncomfortable interview for the PR guy.

I thought... what is NASA doing up there in that space station and what was so important to get that they needed to include a overcrowed crew. This according to the engineer was putting them in extreme danger.

And as far as Dr. Doom is concerned:rolleyes:

You see tiffany? I told you it would be just fine. Even the thermal blanket posed no problems and didn't even get a mention. :)

I'm sure that's why Commander Collins had to fip to page 6 1/2
to read the landing procedures before requesting if there
was center lights ...

She deserves our full respect for her professionlism and piloting abilites.

sayntbrigid, STS-114 carried 15 tons of supplies up to the International Space Station, and returned with some 13 tons of trash and used material.
