Just an observation... since the government shutdown, I've noticed at least eight pirate stations on the air, mostly shortwave 6925, 6935, and just now someone was rocking on 6975. Also heard a station on 1710 claiming to be broadcasting from Point Pelee, Ontario.

As far as I'm concerned, the government can stay CLOSED.

Another one just popped up on 6935 USB @ 8:41Eastern.

When the cat is away, the mice will play. SWEET!

This morning there were three stations on the air, broadcasting for four hours or more. Heard was WBNY "Bunny Radio", Undercover Radio, and Radio Piazano.

All these were heard between 6925 to 6940 with various signal strengths.

From Free Radio Weekly #922 magazine...

=+=+=+=+= North American Stations/Relays =+=+=+=+=

CRYSTAL SHIP:

10/8, 2353-2358, 6950.6/AM; Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum & a short clip of a song repeated several times. Then the song played in its entirety, then an ID. (25342, Hunsicker, PA)

10/8, 0052-0143, 6950.7/AM; 0052 music and English announcement; no 5th harmonic of local 1390 KCRC absent at the moment tho sometimes it cuts on as if something is shorting; but there is briefly some QRM from Spanish 2-way on 6950-USB, possibly a legit Mexinet. Still going at 0112 with music, and still weak; 0119 signal surges briefly during rock music; and at final check 0143. HFUnderground logs say it`s The Crystal Ship. (GH)

KRACKER RADIO:

10/9, 0155-0203+, 6950/AM; SIO:333 Kracker & Radio Jamba Int'l IDS, song Ohio by Modest Mouse, another ID 0203. [Lobdell-MA]

LTO RADIO:

10/8, 0054-0057*, 6925/U; even stronger rock music than 6935; cuts off at 0056 but it`s just a pause with no modulation as synthetic voice comes on with ID sounding like "Al-Tee-Oh Radio", then string of greeting to HF Underground, various individuals ending with Andrew Yoder, then same announcement repeated & "73s for now, until next time" ending at 0057. Lots of logs at hfunderground.com agree its LTO Radio. (GH)

MAC SHORTWAVE:

10/8, 0127-0143, 6925/AM; Slightly on the lo side of 6925. Still at final check 0143. HFUnderground logs say this is MAC Shortwave. (GH)

10/8, 0139-0143+, 6924.5/AM; Kid ancr w/oldies, recap & giggles. QSL via macshortwave@yahoo.com. SIO=3+43- QRM from possible pescador & buzz burst. Old show or resuurection? (Frodge-MI)

10/8, 2219-2350*, 6925/AM; SIO:454 The return of this station after being missing for more than 18 months. Program was hosted by "The Doctor" Who played a show by Paul Starr, followed by an All Beatles show by Ultra Man from March of 2010. They use two email addresses, the old one is: macshortwave@yahoo.com & The new one is macshortwaveradio@gmail.com. At closedown, The Doctor played some movie theme music produced by Jerry Goldsmith & he said they'd be back live this coming weekend. Welcome back MAC! [Lobdell-MA]

10/8, 2317-2351, 6924.6/AM; The young man hosts a Beatles Spectacular Ultraman Show from March 2010. The Kid tells a story about two missionaries being cooked & a 2nd story about Bush, Putin & Queen Elizabeth entering Hell. Get Back, Hey Jude, Revolution & Helter Skelter. Ultraman over at about 2340, when Dr. Benway takes over & plays movie theme music, rants at the SS fisherman (they sounded eastern European to me), gave QSL information and asked for emails. (Hell of a signal: 55555, Hunsicker, PA)

RADIO APPALACHIA:

10/4, 2310-2325, 6924.45; Bluegrass music and IDs. A skit and more music. (23341, Hunsicker, PA)

RADIO CASABLANCA:

10/1, 2313, 6940/AM; pirate with music, including whistling, detectable in noise level. Must be R. Casablanca per direct tip from Rick who said he would be on starting at 2300. Next check at 0053 Oct 11, I can tell it`s still on, but storm noise level is very heavy from the line along the Kansas/Colorado border extending into the OK & TX Panhandles. 0106 I can tell the music is small-band from the era of the 40s, but way too much noise. (GH)

10/10, 2332-2355+, 6940/AM; SIO:222 Rick Blaine playing tunes from the early 1940's, ID at 2346. Song by Harry Roy and His Bat Club Boys at 2351. [Lobdell-MA]

10/10, 2337-2355, 6939.7/AM; 40s music with OM & YL ancrs. Weak signal with
noise & LSB chatter. Mostly unusable. (34342 to 25341, Hunsicker, PA)
10/11, 0059, 6940/AM; Classic 40s music. Good sound, noisy conditions.
s7/s9. (Will-MD)

RADIO FREE WHATEVER:

10/5, 0155-0157, 6925/AM; ID using their wonderful fake accents--popped up and caused a NICE Heterodyne that ruined Liquid Radio and made this unpleasant to listen to! 33+442 0155-0157 5/Oct--Zichi MI

RADIO GALLIFREY GALACTIC

10/6, 2134-2150:05*, 6935/U; Accented ancr w/electro & thumpity-thump music. No drop hrd. SIO=2+53 Another "new" one. (Frodge-MI)

RADIO JAMBA INT'L:

10/9, 0045-0120, 6950.3; 0046 music with heavy het from stronger pirate closer to 6950. John Poet had notified his mailing list at 0018 that The Crystal Ship was being relayed on 6950. Like 24 hours earlier when it was also on this off-frequency. First I made sure the other 6950 station was not local 5th harmonic of 1390 KCRC; this is on 6950.3 or so, and at 0052 IDs as Radio Jamba International, first by M voice, then W. Still clashing at 0101 and 0118. During this porch session with DX-398, 0045-0120 Oct 9, I did not hear any other pirates; too bad the active ones were both in AM and not quite the same frequency. But there were several SSB Spanish ``pescadores`` around 6920-LSB, 6925, 6960 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

RADIO PAISANO:

10/11-12, 2350-2406+, 6925.1/AM, 2350-2406, 11/12-Oct; EE tunes & comedy re Italian courtship, weddings, dining & related activities, including Italian version of Hava Nagila. ID @0005 w/radiopaisano@gmail.com addy. SIO=343 w/buzz bursts. (Frodge-MI)

RADIO STRANGE OUTPOST 7:

10/6, 2259, 6850/AM; Weird intro with computer-generated female voice and retro computer music & ID. 2302, Muzak version of Ob la di, ob la da. s9/s15. good sound, some fading, clear. WBNY relay per e-mail note. (Will-MD)

RED MERCURY LABS:

10/5, 0309-0325+, 6935/U; SIO:232 Weak but steady with rock, such as Runnin' With The Devil by Van Halen, Revelations by Iron Maiden. Full ID 0319 [Lobdell-MA]

10/6, 0347, 6940; The Distance by Cake & Breaking The Law by Judas Priest. (Wolfish-Burnt River)

10/7, 0226-0310+, 6945/U; SIO:333 Psycho Killer, ID & chatting, flute music at 0240 UTC. [Lobdell-MA]

WBNY:

10/4, 2325-2352*, 6924.9/AM; SIO=343- Commander Bunny w/a Government Shutdown Spectacular" broadcast. Mainly a prgm of rock for the monkey boys. Parody ads for potatoes, cereal for kids, and a mansion for $175. Belfast addr. (Zeller-OH)

10/4, 2326-0004*, 6950/AM; WBNY Shutdown Spectacular. WBNY stuff & a WBNY relay of WCS. Paul Starr sings Jive Talkin'. WBNY announcements. Sealord discusses the new WBNY ID. Music: Amish Girl, an ad for Fruity Juice, and a fine song by the Tennessee 'Tards; Her Vagina. Also, ads for Spark and the Playboy Mansion. Because the signal became unusable, the transition to WCS was unclear, but, maybe around 2350. (45454 to "unusable," Hunsicker, PA)

WCS We're/Weird Collective Soul:

10/4-5, 2350-0004, 6950/AM; Whistling, a man talks, an ID & music. OM with QSL info which I missed. More music and an ID (mostly poor to unusable Hunsicker, PA)

10/4-5, 2356-0005, 6924.9/AM; SIO=343- Prgm of rock mx w/OM ancr. Appeared to have used the same xmtr as WBNY earlier at 2325. Gave Belfast addr for repts. (Zeller-OH)

WRRR World Rabbit Rapture Radio:

10/11, 1249. 6920/AM; Monkey Boy song by Crack The Sky & Commander Bunny announcing WRRR World Rabbit Rapture Radio. Loud and clear, steady s9 signal. (Will-MD)

XLR8:

10/7, 0048, 6925/U; Loud punk music, I'm a police car by Larry Wallis; 0056 My dad's a ****ing alcoholic by Frantic; 0107 Short skirt, long jacket by Cake. 0118, Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave & Grooving with a Pict from Pink Floyd's Ummagumma. s7/s9 with powerful audio. (Will-MD)

YHWH:

10/8, 0105-0145, 9775/AM; I finally catch the strange pirate Radio YHWH, which was first reported by Dan Sheedy on 6010 & 5990, and by Bob Larose on 9775, both listening in S California. Bob had it UT Sept 28 during this same hour. I`m usually checking this area for Turkey spurs, etc., but never found it till:

10/9, 0045, 9775; at 0045 nothing but a JBA carrier nor anything plus/minus 5; further chex including 0106 still lack Radio YHWH as heard 24 hours earlier, and the ACI are greatly attenuated by the CME which hit at 2015 Oct 8: 9780 VOA Sri Lanka poor with flutter, and 9770 Turkey very poor. Spaceweather.com reports: ``CME IMPACT, GEO-MAGNETIC STORM: An interplanetary shock wave, possibly the leading edge of a CME, hit Earth's magnetic field on October 8th at approximately 2015 UT (1:15 pm PDT). The impact has sparked a minor (G1-class) geomagnetic storm that could intensify in the hours ahead. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

10/10, 0055, 9775; at 0055 a JBA carrier, and after 0100 nothing at all, third night without any Radio YHWH; altho propagation has really degraded since then (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

10/11, 0057, 9775; looking for Radio YHWH again, but only a JBA carrier, no ACI yet; at 0102 the ACI is on from both sides, and not even the JBA carrier now. Perhaps Friday night = Sabbath will bring it back (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

COMMENTARIOS

Glenn Hauser: Pirate activity is apparently up on the assumption that
the FCC`s near-total closedown will make it even less likely to get
busted. Three or four stations at once on the pirate-band!

I sure wish I could join in on this as it does sound like real fun.

You are talking about a HAM radio - correct?

Hate to sound so ignorant:(

Well, this is more or less shortwave broadcasts. 6.9 MHz is just below the 40-meter band for hams. These are real pirate broadcasters, illegal as heck. Someone having some fun.

Id you have a CC Radio with shortwave, you could likely hear them.

Keep posting these updates! When my wife visits in November, I am hoping she will bring one of my radios, the K2 or the FT840, either would work.

Will do. Hopefully the government doesn't quit their bickering and we'll get some more pirates on.

Lately they have been on just after breakfast and after dinner. That's when that portion of the band gets out the best.

Can't speak for Canada (other than there seems to be a lot of people up there doing it), but here in the U.S. the conviction is $10,000 and/or 10-years in jail. In reality, the fines have been $1,000 to $2,000, and I don't think anyone has served any time except for one squirrel in Florida who threatened a U.S. Marshall.

Some of the smarter pirates record their shows, then play them back on mobile transmitters which they set up in parks, changing their location with each transmission.

I received a QSL card from Radio Piazano today thanking me for the reception report.

As expected, now that the jack-boots are back to work, many of the stations have fallen silent.

Still, there is fishing to be had.
