i not sure your getting my e-mails. so first to tell you thank you for the wonderful radio. at first i was confused about things, mainly because of me, afraid to break it. but them my friends from a radio forum walked me through it. as i thought no one here gets on the radio, (2-Meter). no one. there was one crazy guy but he was looking for date....lol, and except the generals and i cant go there....yet. but i finally reached the 880 and man what power its got....can't wait for quartzsite. we had a real bad wind Strom last month and it took out my new quad antenna:mad: so when we get back from the coast I'll put up the j-pole i made and play some more.:D
have a great summer:cool: stay cool. thank you again.

Haven't gotten any emails from you lately, Sharri, but the same email address works.

The ICOM 706 MKII is a great little radio. A lot of power and many features usually found only in the higher price class. This model also has the DSP Unit, I believe. I remember Art talking on the radio a few years back about what a great little rig it was for the money.

Seems strange you do not have many 'talkers' on the 2 meter repeaters there. It is the band of choice for mobile operations just about everywhere. Have you checked out the 2 meter repeaters in your area? That is where most of the traffic is.

I knew you said you were about to take the General exam, and there are more opportunities on those bands as well. There is no longer a 'code' requirement to get the General license, so it shouldn't be too difficult. ;)

Go for it!

Sorry to hear your quad antenna blew down in high winds. Gotta have 'ears'. When you get back and set up your J-Pole, you might want to check out 'Moon Bounce'. ;)

Have fun on your travels, Sharri - and be sure to post when you can.

I really want to learn, and get involved in Ham radio. Been concerned about doing it in NYC though as a result of all the RF interference in the area that essentially kills the shortwave bands.

Medium Wave DXing, that on the other hand I do play around with on my GE Superadio III :)

The test are simple. And there r antennas that u can get tht won't bother any 1. if your downtown. just depends on wht u want 2 do. of course the bigger the radio the bigger the problem. but if u learn wht u need 2 do and r good at it there should b no problem at all. u should try it. if u like radios and talking it'll wrk 4 u.

whts med wave dxing?

Medium Wave is the AM band, I like to try and see where I can pull in stations from. I have heard that with a good AM radio, on the East Coast it is possible to pick up Europe - but I have been unsuccessful so far.

I have a CCRadio-SW, but I still always find myself going back to the GE Superadio late at night (which is a favorite of AM listeners - despite it's flaws - but hey, it's still an amazing radio) :)

Any recommendations on a good started rig? My landlady is open to my putting antennas on the roof :)

k. get some good strong med. gauge copper wire as long as you can get.

strip both ends.

about 3 inches on one end,

get as long as pole as you can get.

tape the wire on the tip with the 3 inch strip part 2 inches above the pole.

with the other end strip off about 6 inches

wrap around your antenna

or if you have a plug in for the antenna stuff the wire in there. i could not get my shoprt wave to pick up andthing. so i read this on the internet and did it. wow was listening to japan and russia.
went all over. it just a cheap fun way to to this.

My friend took his wire and totally stripped 10 feet and taped one tip in the middle of a big window. the wrapped it in a circle around and around. taping it down on two side's. until all but 4ft of the wire was against the window. then taped it on his antenna. worked for him.

hope i wrote this right.
