I'm hearing voices in my speaker

Post by dotcosm » 01-31-2006 03:44 PM

Heard voices in what should have been a quiet room. Traced them to a set of powered speakers that were on but not connected to anything.

Is that normal? And, how can I make it stop?

Probably was Bush snarling at you: "I TOLD you not to see that damned movie! You're on your own with the tire irons now!"

:D :D :D :D :D
"Fuggedah about it, Jake --- it's Chinatown!"

hehe Joe.

It's a ham guy, I'm hearing one end of the conversation. He sounds like he's probably in my neighborhood.

He's talking about the typical things hams talk about:

"Yeah Mark, you're coming in real clear now.
(pause)
"800 watts"
(pause)
"Oh, it's supposed to rain a couple of inches"
(pause)
"Hold on, I'm getting some static"
(pause)
"Is the red light on?"
(pause)

(and so on)

Like I said, typical ham talk.

BUT! I want to use those speakers to listen to Art from Sunday night, and these guys (well, this guy) keeps interrupting!

I thought of yelling into my speakers but even I know that probably won't work.

The ham may not know his equipment is emitting a signal which is causing this interference. If you listen for the call sign, you can look up the ham's location and probably email address - and let the ham know about the problem. qrz.com Have you tried another outlet for the speakers? There should also be ways to shield your speakers. You could call your local Radio Shack.

Thanks Linnea. I went outside and took a look around, and the house across the street seems to have an antenna on the roof, that's not a TV antenna. I'll bet that's the guy.

So what's the etiquette in this matter, I wonder? Is it cool to knock on his door and say "umm, hi, do you happen to have a ham radio? Well, I can hear everything you've been saying..." -- but of course, hams already know that anyone can hear them, I guess, so that shouldn't be a big deal.

There's a store in town that has all kinds of electronic stuff, including ham equipment; it'd be cool if this guy is a ham and would help me get started!

Hello,
He should give his call sign every 10 minutes or so. You can find where he lives and possibly his e-mail address from http://www.eham.net or http://www.arrl.org.
You could drop him a line and let him know he may be causing some interference.
There are several filters available that might correct the problem...

My dad is a Ham and when I was a kid he used to blow out my speakers all the time. Drove me nuts. He changed his frequency and that fixed the problem...for a while. Buying better speakers helped, too.
