HAM RADIO IN SPACE:

SIGHTLY USED FM SATELLITE GIVEN TO HAM RADIO

Ham radio is being given access to a slightly used but working FM relay satellite. The bird is POSAT One which was launched over a decade ago on September 25th 1993.

POSAT One also has the designation PO-28. It's primary mission was for commercial use on frequencies outside the Amateur bands. But the bird was designed with the capability to operate on Amateur service frequencies as well. After prolonged negotiations it has been agreed that the satellite can be switched permanently to the Amateur frequencies.

It is expected that the process to change over the operation of the satellite from commercial to Amateur use will take a couple of weeks. Once completed, PO-28 will Uplink on 145.925 and 145.975 MHz. Downlink will be in the 70 centimeter band on 435.075 and 435.275 MHz

PO-28 was built at the University of Surrey as a collaborative program with a consortium of Portuguese academia and Industry. Its reassignment to the ham radio bands was announced at last weeks AMSAT-UK International Space Colloquium in Guilford, England. ( M5AKA)
