what else do you do in this situation? I guess he could have held it himself. I agree it is ridiculous looking and even insulting, but now that I think about it what would be the right way to do this?

yeah but they would look dumb if it was nice out. They would have to bring them out when it starts raining, and that would still be awkward. I am thinking maybe a clear dome way above them.

If it looks like rain could occur, then roll out a high portable tent (with wheels) that is just large enough to cover the Pres and his guest. Or better yet, if it looks like rain could occur, hold the press conference in the WH press room. It ain't rocket science!
