Katrina: Five Years

Post by Live365 » 08-29-2010 12:16 PM

I joined the Fantastic Forum in January of 2003, after Art Bell, in one of his last shows as un-retired host, said go ye forth. That this would be the place to watch. (I seem to recall he kept that promise!) But my join date as Live365 reads September 2005. It was after -- and because of -- Hurricane Katrina that I came running back. Oh, a riotous time that was on the Ship. But there was no other place on Earth I would have rather spent those days and weeks. And months.

If you have memories or stories about this chapter in our history five years ago, please share them.

"I am coming home. I will rebuild. I am New Orleans." A sign left in the 9th Ward, seen on September 1st, 2005.

It is sad to me, that there are no posts to this thread. SL gets it, and we share that.

But the idea that no other Pirate has anything to say on this anniversary horrifies me. Horrifies me.

What would interest you instead?

Live, I remember watching this horrible event unfold on TV and just screaming at the TV get them out of there,it was probably the most helpless I have felt. Some of the images are still very clear in my mind. Especially those of the houses with their doors marked because there were bodies inside.

Here is a site that has many photos of this horrific hurricane.

My heart still goes out to the people of New Orleans, as they try to rebuild their lifes. Somehow I think none of them will ever be the same.

Live, I think you'll agree that sometimes the national media picks a topic and drives it into the ground. Such is the case with this issue, but I'm glad to hear that some of these talking heads include Mississippi, not just New Orleans.

I remember well this event unfolding. I have close friends who lived through it. I told my wife that if I could do something, I would. Less than two years later, I was able to back up these words with action.

Here's my post from 2009. As for an update, I went again this last March and I'll go again next year.

"We're coming back" and so they are. They are well on their way.

I donated a considerable amount of money to the survivors of Katrina... more than I should have, but enough that I felt it would make a big difference.

Now I'm living on $900/month, and New Orleans STILL hasn't been restored. Seventy-five percent of the people who were displaced have still not come back, and most of the truly severely damaged areas are still just that... damaged.

And now I'm wondering... where did all that money I gladly gave up, go to do?

I'm sorry, but hearing about Katrina in every newscast for the past week and the next few days just isn't something I can stand to hear.

No, I'm NOT sorry I donated the money; I'm just disappointed that the people who SHOULD have received it, obviously DID NOT.
